We have received press releases from Universal Studios and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that they will phase out the releases of DVD movies in favour of next generation formats Bluray (Sony) and HD-DVD (Universal). Universal names the increasing number of illegal copies to be the reason for this step. Although programs are already able to defeat the protection, Universal still believes in the strengths of AACS over CSS which is used on DVD.
Sony on the other hand clearly wants to push their Bluray format in an aim to win the format war between this format and HD-DVD. According to their spokesperson, we can also expect players with a streetprice of less than $300 before the end of this year. One of the first blockbuster movies that will not appear on DVD anymore is the soon to be shown Spiderman 3.
With the move, the company also hopes to increase popularity of their Playstation 3 game console that is using Blu-ray technology for games and which is also able to play Blu-ray movies.
However with both formats being pushed to phase out DVDs, it will become harder for customers to decide between these formats as making the wrong choice might soon leave you with an expensive piece of electronic garbage. The big studios expect to release all their movies on blue laser formats at the end of this year and will stop producing DVD movies by then as well.
Update: Like many of you already noticed, this was our anual april fools joke. We hope you enjoyed it.

But maybe people can find a way to convert these new formats to DVD so we can download them on P2P networks and burn them on recordable DVD!
