The annual CES tech show in Las Vegas will start in a few days. Will this event showcase a solution to the Blu-ray/HD DVD war? CES will feature new HD DVD and Blu-ray players, with some able to play both formats. But these players are still too expensive when compared to the dirt cheap DVD player with its universally available movies. The real action can be found in 'upscaling' DVD players. They take the standard definition and sharpen it up so it looks smoother and clearer on HDTV screens.
The image on an upscaled DVD player comes not as sharp as on a Blu-ray or HD DVD disc, but why spend a large amount on a format that might be dead in a few months? Most new Blu-ray and HD DVD players now offer the ability to upscale your DVD, but why all the focus on simple playback iTWire says.
Consumers love to record content, but HD DVD and Blu-ray players can't. Hopefully CES will showcase some recording players for the western market, since Japan is already at a high price. Will you buy a high defintion player if you can record content?
