Will Hollywood decide the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war?

Will Hollywood decide the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war?
Does anyone have an idea who will win this war? It is doubtful to guess correctly at this point or maybe it will be a draw. But, some companies are hedging their bets in the meantime...at least that's what the Inquirer says:

But in the meantime there's one giant firm which straddles both "standards" like the famous Colossus at Rhodes, although modern archaeology says it's a myth that vessels sailed into the harbour between the legs of bronzed Helios, the sun god. The statue was 100 feet high, but the width of the harbour mouth would have meant Helios' cojones would have suffered the first time a Carthaginian boat attempted the passage.

Quietly, however, Samsung and Toshiba signed a joint agreement in early April in which the Korean giant undertook to ramp up production of HD DVD for Toshiba. Toshiba's manufacturing capabilities are not great, but Samsung's are. And Samsung hasn't necessarily decided which way to jump, so far.

While one group including Sony, Matsushita and other firms are lining up to support Blu-Ray, Toshiba and NEC are in love with the HD DVD and the Inquirer says they are busting their humps to gear up production, a sure sign of confidence.

What are your thoughts on this matter? One better than the other, room for both formats, compatability issues?

btspmRegardless of how the Blu-Ray v. HD-DVD debate turns out, kudos for managing to squeeze in a reference to ancient 'nads.

RichManHow ta'heII would you know Discman? Have you already had samples of each so that you could make such a bold statement? It will cost considerably more to manufacture Blu-Ray in the beginning. Who do you think will pay these extra costs? And, there's no guarantee that the production costs will ever get as low as HD-DVD will be. But, I'm sure Hollywood will be the ones to decide the winner...

Hollywood will chose the Format that will maximize their profits. They don't give a damn about the technical aspects of either format or which is superior. They have a monopoly so why care about the details. They will chose the one that maximizes the profit they make off each movie they sell.

If we use SupremeCheddar's example of how Hollywood will choose and RichMan's point then here's your next DVD Format- http://video.movies.go.com/ez-d/ puke

There won't be room for both in terms of movies being released on each but I guess it will get to a point where both formats have usefulness therefore both will adopted to some extent. If that happens, manufacturers will have to make dual format recorders again.

Blu-ray will rule, it's created by the vast majority of the companies, approved by the DVD Forum, and much better than HD DVD.

GristyMcFistyDo we REALLY care who wins? As long as we can back up our original discs...

GristyMcFistyHmmmm, 48 hours, just enough time to make a permanent backup... devil
By GristyMcFisty, Monday 10 May 2004 16:27
GristyMcFistyStating the obvious but the format that'll win will be the one that Hollywood consider to be the most difficult to copy and the one that they'll make the most money out of by costing peanuts to produce. Are both these formats being introduced and Read Only AND Recordable straight away? Keeping in mind that DVD was originally a Read-Only format.

Mad BurnerI do not care either (as long as I can back them up) since I will probably own both of the formats much like I do with DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and DVD-RAM. I will use the format that best suits the job.

DeadManYou forget. It's all about marketing. The name DVD is already known and popular. Consumers will look at HD-DVD as instantly recognisable. They will look at Blu-Ray and go "WTF is that?". It's all about branding and marketing dudes. The war is already won in that respect.
