Microsoft's Zune has managed to gain enough sales in the first quarter of this year to reach 4% of the MP3 player market, making it the 3rd most popular MP3 player brand. SanDisk has also managed to increase its market share slightly to 11%. Unfortunately for Creative, its market share has made a significant drop, falling from 4% in the first quarter of 2007 to just 2% in the same quarter this year. Apple still clearly leads, falling just 1% to 71% between the same two quarters.
Last year, Microsoft launched its second generation Zune series and updated its Zune firmware to offer the new features to the first generation Zune users, such as for television show support for its Zune Marketplace, genre sorting, etc. The Zune reached its 1 million sales mark last May and has now just passed its 2 million sales mark.
Just recently, there have been rumours that Microsoft was working with NBC Universal to develop a copyright detection feature for the Zune, which would prevent its users from playing downloaded video content that has been illegally shared online. However, they have now firmly denied this move saying that this is not true.
