HighMAT:

HighMAT (High-Performance Media Access Technology) is a way of making a CD that can be played on computers and consumer AV devices, such as DVD players. HighMAT is a new format, co-developed and supported by Microsoft Corporation and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd.

HighMAT CD records compressed audio files, video files and images onto a CD along with the file information and playlists for use on supported electronic devices. For example, in the case of audio files, the artist, song title, composer, genre and lyrics are also recorded onto the CD. You can also create menus that contain playlists arranged by categories such as artist or album that can be used on a player.

HighMAT CD Creation:

The HighMAT project wizard was run. The first thing needed is to select either a new project or load and edit an earlier compiled one.

New project was selected for this test.

Now it was time to select the language. English was selected for this test.

The next page is where you select the different content for your disc. For this test two picture folders were created, two audio folders created and a single video file were selected for the project.

On this page you get a summary of the project, including the actual project size and the estimated compiled size. As we can see, the project will fit comfortably on a 90 minute CDR media.

The last screen shows us the task completed successfully. After this the burned project was tested in Windows Media Player 10 and it played flawlessly.

I personally like this feature; it's nice to have the ability to have so much different content on a single playable disc. The wizard makes creating a HighMAT compatible disc very easy indeed.

The best results were on my set top DVD player which showcased this new format at its best, with easy selectable menu's and extremely good quality on all content.
