Reviewer: OC-Freak
Provided by: BenQ
Firmware: B3BC
Manufactured: Unknown

It has been a while since last time we looked into a BenQ drive. The drive they sent us was their latest DVD-Writer; the BenQ DW822A. This drive is the first drive on the market that has hardware capable of writing dual layer DVD+R discs. The firmware is not ready for dual layer yet, but you have the promise to get a firmware upgrade on 30. September 2004 that supports it. Read on to find out how this drive compares to other competing drives on the market.

Also thanks to Memorex for providing some of the media used in this review.

Some BenQ history:

We took a quick look at the company information found at BenQ Europe's web pages:

The most important features of this drive are of course the possibility to upgrade it to a Dual Layer capable writer with a firmware upgrade. Other benefits are the large 8Mb buffer, which is rare to see in most modern DVD-Writers. On the other side it's surprising to see a new DVD-Writer nowadays to only support 10x CD-RW and 24x CD-R writing speeds, this of course places it a long step behind many other new writers in this area.

But it may have other strengths that could not be read out from the specifications, so continue to read to see what our test tells.
