Pioneer:
As expected, Pioneer was showing off their new DVR-A09XL DVD Writer. We spoke with a representative from Pioneer USA who informed us that this drive should be released within the next 2 weeks in the USA. DVD-R DL writing capabilities will not be available at the launch of this drive. This is unfortunate, as it was expected by many that the drive would support DVD-R DL at its' release. Interestingly enough, the drive does support 6X DVD+R DL writing.

Ritek:
Ritek is one of the leading Taiwanese producers of optical storage media.
Here we have the new RiDATA 16X DVD-R.
Ritek is also introducing its' dataplay recorder and players in the USA. The current Data Play discs store up to 500MB of data. Future versions are planned to have a capacity up to 1GB. The unit above also features an integrated FM radio and voice recorder.
Verbatim:
Verbatim and its' parent company Mitsubishi Chemicals are always at the forefront of developing new media types and discs that are capable of higher recording speeds. Below we have pictures of a Verbatim DVD-R DL disc and also some Verbatim Lightscribe DVD+R media.
LiteOn:
At LiteOn, we found the SOHW-1673SX (external) and SOHW-1673S on display.
This drive had the following specifications listed:
- High Performance 16X DVD Writing
- 16x8x, 16x6x, 4x DL, 16x + 48x24x48x
- 8.5GB Double Layer Capacity for Data Backup
- Holds 4-Hour HQ Video / 2,000 Songs
- Industry Standard High Speed USB2.0 Interface
- Records to All Major DVD Formats (+/-) & CD Recordable Media
- Plays DVDs and CDs
- Includes Nero Burning SW & PowerDVD Playback SW
Memorex:
Along with their large selection of media types, Memorex debuted their new external 16x16 DVD recorder at CES. Of particular interest is their innovative USB 1.1/2.0 indicator LED located on the back of the drive enclosure. This LED lights green when connected to USB 2.0 and red while connected to USB 1.1. Memorex believes they are truly looking out for the users' best interests by including innovative and useful features such as this USB LED indicator.

Philips:
Of course we had to stop by Philips during our visit to CES. Philips is a major player in the optical storage world and is one of the leading companies of both the DVD+RW alliance and the Blu-Ray Disc Association.
Above you can see a Philips Blu-ray / DVD / CD internal PC recorder. Below you can find a photo of the internals.
A Philips engineer was kind enough to give us a demonstration on the tri-format burning capabilities of this recorder. First a VCD image was burned, then a DVD+R (DVD Video) image was burned, and then a High Definition Blu-Ray disc was recorded, all using the same internal PC recorder. We used a special edition of Nero with Blu-ray Disc support to burn the Blu-ray disc. Here are some screenshots for your viewing pleasure:
According to Nero, the Blu-ray disc was burned at 1x (4,495 KB/s), which is close to 4x in DVD writing speed (5,540 KB/s). The Philips engineer also informed us that we will probably have 2x Blu-ray recording at the retail launch of this drive.
Blu-ray disc; you can distinguish the recorded area by looking at the thin, lighter colored ring near the center of the disc.
All in all we were very impressed by some of the new products and technologies that will be released in the coming year(s). We believe it is a very exciting time for optical technology! If you would like to ask any questions regarding our trip to CES, please feel free to post them in this forum thread.
