A closer Look at PowerDirector

PowerDirector 6.5 HE — the Magic Editing Tools for High-Def Videos

  • Capture, edit and burn high-definition and 16:9 video content
  • Create titles from templates with the improved Title Designer
  • Output video in 720i/1080i high-definition formats,
    including MPEG-2 and WMV
  • Stabilize shaky videos and sharpen picture focus with Magic Fix
  • Edit movies with Magic Style, auto-combining effects, transitions, and titles

Let’s create a video DVD and look at the process a little closer:

The first step is to capture our raw footage; clicking on the capture button on the toolbar will get us started.

A look at the help files and we see our options

For our test we will work with one of the sample video clips

Having our clip moved to the “time line” we will now choose a Theme for our project.

Next we will output our project by clicking on the “Produce Button”; as you can see from the next screenshot you have a good number of options to include a “You Tube” ready option.

We choose “create a File” since we are testing the program’s ability to burn an authored disc playable on our system as well as our stand-alone player.

We picked Mpeg2 format to give us a nice quality file to burn to our test media.  One the file has been converted we will create our disc by clicking on the “create Disc” button.

Once we have picked the styles we click on the “Burn Button” and the program takes through the process.

Project completed.

The final disc plays perfectly on our test system as well as our stand-alone player.

PowerDirector 6.5 HE comes with a good quality transitions, and several title options. Though titles can be created and edited, it would have been nice to see more made available at the outset. More can be used when upgrading to the full version of PowerDirector 6 Ultra, which also offers more effects and templates for DVD authoring, auto editing options, SmartMusic soundtracks, and additional goodies. Of all the programs in the suite PowerDirector Express is the one that would benefit the most from the paid upgrade offerings. This Express Version will get the user through simple projects, but will leave experienced users looking for more options.

Those "more options" come in the form of the $59.99 upgrade to PowerDirector 6 Ultra.

We have highlighted a few of the main components of CyberLink’s DVD Suite Ultra; but there is more.  We will address the remainder of the Suite’s offerings in the “Additional Included Programs” page.  So let’s move on…..
