Tests:

The first test I performed was ripping the movie to the hard drive with DVD Decrypter and then using DVDneXtCOPY to re-encode the movie. Everything in the movie remained in the new encoded movie which was then burnt onto a 4.7Gb disk.

  • The DaVinci Code
  • Original Size - 7.7Gb
  • Total Compression Time - 28:43

  • Hoodwinked
  • Original Size – 6.2Gb
  • Total Compression Time - 25:56

  • Nacho Libre
  • Original Size - 7.3Gb
  • Total Compression Time – 29:12

  • Over The Hedge
  • Original Size – 5.7Gb
  • Total Compression Time – 24:34

  • Superman Returns
  • Original Size - 7.9Gb
  • Total Compression Time - 29:59

All of the movies played in both DVD Players. The one thing that I found though was that on the Samsung DVD player it was very slow to seek to the required chapter when skipping through and that I couldn’t fast-forward above 2x without it locking up.

Although subjective all of the movies looked good when being played back. The only one you could really tell the difference in was Superman Returns which had been reduced in size by some 3Gb’s. Although you could spot the difference in places it was not unwatchable and was very good considering the size reduction. Although The DaVinci Code is nearly the same size, onscreen more happens in Superman Returns which is most likely why it was easier to see the artefacts.

The second test I performed was using AnyDVD in the background and then using the DVDneXtCOPY to re-encode the movie. Everything in the movie remained in the new encoded movie which was then burnt onto a 4.7Gb disk.

  • The DaVinci Code
  • Original Size - 7.7Gb
  • Total Compression Time – 29.52

  • Hoodwinked
  • Original Size – 6.2Gb
  • Total Compression Time – 27.34

  • Nacho Libre
  • Original Size - 7.3Gb
  • Total Compression Time – 31.16

  • Over The Hedge
  • Original Size – 5.7Gb
  • Total Compression Time – 25.58

  • Superman Returns
  • Original Size - 7.9Gb
  • Total Compression Time – 31.46

As you can see the use of AnyDVD only slightly increases the time taken to encode the movie. Once again the movie all played fine with no more artefacts present in the movie than test 1.

I did a few other tests which included making a backup of Superman Returns straight to a DVD-9 disk and also a straight copy of a DVD-5 disk to make sure that no re-encoding happened. Both of these tests where completed fine.

The Positives and Negatives are next.

Not being able to FF above 2x may have been because of the DVD writer/Media combination. Not the program itself.

One way to fin out is to try a different media and or writer combination and see what happens.

Nice review.
Yes very nice review and thank you for taking the time to do so as well. I agree on the above poster to as I have no issues on this. I do know you used good media or assume so. :B
