Conclusion:
Most of the tests that I performed on the POD were completed perfectly. The only test that failed were that a couple of downloaded video files that wouldn't play. Overall this makes this a very complete device that will do just about anything you want it to.
Looking back to the original statement made by MobiNote,
MobiNote DVX-POD 7010 is the first 7-inch portable media player (PMP) in the world that combines MPEG-4 media player, MP3 player, voice recorder and photo viewer. Furthermore, the portable device has a built-in digital video recorder (PVR) function that records MPEG-4 format TV video programs directly from television.
The DVX-POD 7010 comes with a 20GB hard drive that stores huge MPEG-4 video, MP3 music, JPEG/GIF/BMP images or any supported types of data file. Empowered by 7-inch high resolution with 720x480 pixels, it plays video up to 30 frames per second and supports up to D1 video quality. The DVX-POD 7010 is very easy to use with your fingertips. It's definitely the best choice if you are looking for a powerful portable media player.
I can say that this is the best multi purpose player that I have seen specification wise and defiantly the best one that I have had a chance to play with. In total I used it nearly everyday for about two weeks. I put my staff Christmas party pictures onto it so that everyone could see them the day after. I used it on the way to work as an MP3 player and I also used it to watch a couple of movies on it. All of these things it did fantastically. I only had one problem with it during that whole time where it stopped responding and I had to use the reset button to get it going again. I'm not sure what really happened there but once the reset button had been pushed in it restarted itself and continued to work without problems.
With a gadget like this it is the screen size and definition that wins it for it. Nothing at present comes close to it. Many devices are capable of similar deeds that it can do, but once again nothing does them all in a single box that you can carry around with you in your pocket.
Hopefully this is the first in the next generation of mobile gadgets. I feel that all it really needed was a camera that you can snap onto it and it would be complete. That said I really liked the pod for what it can do now. Playback of the movies is excellent and the large hard drive means that you can have several high quality movies, thousands of pictures and quite a few MP3 all on there at the same time. Couple all that with the fact that you can also use it like a normal external hard drive and place documents onto it to move from computer to computer this is certainly the Swiss army knife of media devices around today.
Q&A:
To complete this review off, I submitted a few questions to the developers of the pod, regarding the device and future developments of it. Below are my questions and their responses.
At present there is no support for XviD on the pod. Is this something that is being looked into and can it be added via a firmware update?
We are seriously considering the supporting of more codecs. We might also consider offering solutions on the transcoder software on the PC side to meet consumer needs.
When newer codec's or versions of a codec are released can these be updated on the pod?
Yes, once new codecs are offered, users will be able to update via firmware upgrade on the unit.
Are there any additional features that you are planning to add to the current pod or future pods?
We are always listening to what the end users are feeding back to us. During the past six months, we have gathered more than 168 possible features and options for our future devices and we are we are sure that we will come out with devices that will not only meet, but beyond their expectations.
I will provide more detailed info once this info is more explicitly laid out.
Would it be possible to have external devices like a camera or speakers directly connected to the pod?
We are now offering external speakers that perfectly match the style of our currently DP-7010. The sound quality is much better than those that are currently built-in with the 3.5"-5" players. We will have them available in the next couple of weeks.
At present there is no option to delete any content from the pod unless it is plugged into a computer. Was there any specific reason for this?
Good question. We thought since all content transfer is dependent on PC, it is makes sense to edit and delete files on the PC side. For instance, what if you accidentally deleted a file that you don't have a back up on PC? Users will not be able to recover the deleted file.
However, these are differences in preference and we have been listening to what our customers are saying and will give it a good thought about it.
My personal feelings were that the synchronization software was lacking in features. Renaming folders seemed difficult and moving things around non-existent. Are there any plans to add more features or improve the usability of the software over time?
In fact, Video-Vault, provided by X-Software is a great solution to manage media content. Its cutting edge, 'one-click" usability provides great convenience to users to manage and transport their video content quickly and easily.
Many people are obviously going to be interested in the pod. Can you give a retail price and where the pod can be bought from for are worldwide members?
The retail price for in the
Lastly we come to the Final Word on the pod

I don't understand very well the question. Actually, XviD is a MPEG-4 encoder, not a new format. I guess there is confusion between codec and format here. XviD-encoded files can be played with a lot of players that can decode MPEG-4. for instance, the ffmpeg MPEG-4 decoder is enough to read efficiently XviD files under Windows, Linux or Mac.
So if DVXPOD has a problem to read XviD files, the problem lies elsewhere.

Archos AV700 anyone!? this have been around for years AND plays XviD. This thing is retailing at £399, it three years too late I'm afraid!
