We at CDFreaks would like to present an exclusive 1st look at the latest drive from BenQ the DW1640. At the time this article was written, the BenQ DW1640 was available for sale in Germany - meaning we got hold of one before the official launch.
The BenQ DW1640 supports 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 8x DVD+R9 DL writing technology, allowing dual layer discs of 8.5Gb to be written. So far this is the worlds first DVD-burner to support the DVD+R9 DL format at 8x.

What's inside the box?
On this page we will take a look at what the drive came shipped with, and take a look at the drive and its technology.

On the front side we can also find our Award logo, which was given to the BenQ DW1620.

Now it's time to take a look at the drive itself:

The front is pretty strange looking, a lot of 'sharp" edges, at the same time it's pretty simple as it has an eject button, a LED (green - for read and write - we prefer a different LED colour though for writing), and an emergency eject hole.
The logos from the left to right: BenQ logo, DVD+R DL, DVD+ReWritable High Speed, DVD-R/RW, CD-RW Ultra speed+.

On the underside of the drive we found one sticker, and we can read it was manufactured in Malaysia, dated March 2005.

Top

Side
On top of the drive and on the right side, we can see the ventilation system/feature called Air Flow Cooling System (AFCS) and Anti-Dust Cooling System (ADCS), but more about this later.

On the back of the drive there are from the left: digital audio connector??; analogue audio connector; pins and jumper to set the drive to cable select, slave or master; IDE connector, power connector.
Now, let us install the drive and check out the features on the next page…

a question: why is there no DVD-R DL read test ?

-rDL is not compatible in anything unlike +rDL with dvd-rom booktype!!
