Conclusion:

It really was fun to experiment with this new DVD format and the knowledge gained from the experience was quite valuable. Also, it helped to clear up some myths and speculations for us.

The DVD-R DL format uses DVD-R as book-type and during our tests we could see that there are some read-back compatibility issues with some PC DVD-Writers. There are also some issues with the very poor compatibility with DVD Standalone devices.

Whether or not the compatibility issues can be corrected with a firmware update, it is not known at this time. Meaning, we need to see - what will happen in the future. At least the format is very new and we guess it will take some time for it to mature.

Wow, this review really made me think twice about DVD-R DL media. I would never have thought these would me that incompatible with DVD players. I don't own a DVD burner yet but now I know it's support for burning DVD-R DL media won't play a major role since I will probably not buy such discs and will go for DVD+R DL.
