Writing Data CD-R/RW discs:
The specifications state that the drive should be able to write CD-Rs at 40x and CD-RWs at 32x:


The HP dvd840e uses CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to write CD-R's at 40x. This gives an average writing speed of 30.31x and a writing time of 3 minutes and 6 seconds.


The HP dvd840e uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write CD-RWs at 32x. The average speed is 26.28x and total writing time is 3 minutes and 41 seconds.
In this first look, we did not include any quality scans of the CD-R/RW discs.
DVD-Writing performance:
The specifications of this drive tell us that it should write DVD+R DL/-R DL at 8x/4x, DVD±R at 16x and DVD+RW/-RW at 8x/6x.
DVD+R at 16x:



The HP dvd840e uses CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to write DVD+R at 16x. This gives an average writing speed of 11.93x and a writing time of 5 minutes and 39 seconds.

DVD+RW at 8x:



The HP dvd840e only wrote this 8x media at 4x. The average speed is 4.02x and total writing time is 14 minutes and 44 seconds.

The HP dvd840e uses Z-CLV (Zone Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD+RW at 8x, with a average writing speed of 7.47x, and a writing time of 8 minutes and 36 seconds.

Above a Nero CD-DVD Speed Disc Quality scan and we can see the disc got a Quality score of 25. Very high PI-Errors at the beginning of the disk and high PI-Failures spikes throughout the media.
DVD-R at 16x:



The HP dvd840e uses CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to write DVD-R at 16x. This gives an average writing speed of 11.91x, and a writing time of 5 minutes and 29 seconds.

Above, a Nero CD-DVD Speed Disc Quality scan and we can see the disc got a Quality score of 57. We can clearly see the high PI-Failures at the end of the disk.



Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R media - average writing speed of 11.95x, and a writing time of 5 minutes and 35 seconds.

DVD-RW at 6x:

The Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL disc burned at 8x got a quality score of 84.
DVD-R DL at 4x:



The HP dvd840e uses CLV, (Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD-R DL at 4x. This gives an average writing speed of 3.98x, and a writing time of 27 minutes and 09 seconds.

The Verbatim 4x DVD-R DL disc burned at 4x got a quality score of 70.
