Writing Data CD-R/RW discs:


The specifications state that the drive should be able to write CD-Rs at 40x and CD-RWs at 32x:


The HP dvd840e uses CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to write CD-R's at 40x. This gives an average writing speed of 30.31x and a writing time of 3 minutes and 6 seconds.


The HP dvd840e uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write CD-RWs at 32x. The average speed is 26.28x and total writing time is 3 minutes and 41 seconds.

In this first look, we did not include any quality scans of the CD-R/RW discs.

 

DVD-Writing performance:


The specifications of this drive tell us that it should write DVD+R DL/-R DL at 8x/4x, DVD±R at 16x and DVD+RW/-RW at 8x/6x.

DVD+R at 16x:



The HP dvd840e uses CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to write DVD+R at 16x. This gives an average writing speed of 11.93x and a writing time of 5 minutes and 39 seconds.

The HP dvd840e uses Z-CLV (Zone Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD+RW at 8x, with a average writing speed of 7.47x, and a writing time of 8 minutes and 36 seconds.

The Verbatim 4x DVD-R DL disc burned at 4x got a quality score of 70.

Much work to do for HP/LG. The writing-quality is not so good for a LG-drive
Looks promising! I own a HP300e, and am still very happy with it.
