Test machine:

For this review we will be using a computer with the following configuration:

Hardware:

  • Motherboard: ECS Elitegroup N2U400-A with Nvidia nForce 2 Ultra-400 and nForce MCP chipset.
  • Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton) 333 MHz FSB.
  • RAM: 1 GB Infineon PC2700 DDR
  • GFX: ATI Radeon 9600 XT
  • Sound: Onboard C-Media AC97
  • Hard disk: Seagate Barracuda ST3250823A 250 GB

System set-up:

The Lite-On SHW-1635S was connected as Secondary Master and identified itself as LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-1635S. DMA (Direct Memory Access) and autorun was enabled for all devices.

Software:

Windows XP professional is installed on the computer along with Service Pack 2 for windows XP. We will be using the following software in this review:

Installation:

We quickly installed the drive without any problems and here is a screenshot from Nero InfoTool:

Our drive came shipped with firmware YS06, but was updated to firmware YS0B (see below).

The only drawbacks we could see are: the missing Mt Rainier support along with the small buffer size.

Features and techniques:

BookType (bitsetting):

The Lite-On SHW-1635S supports Bitsetting, and this feature can be controlled/changed with the Bitsetting option in Nero CD-DVD Speed, see below:

Error/quality scanning:

The Lite-On SHW-1635S supports error reporting just like earlier drives from Lite-On. Here are two examples on programs you may use for checking your written discs for errors.

KProbe is developed by a Lite-On employee, but it's not an official Lite-On program. This is what we use in our reviews.

Nero CD-DVD Speed is just as good and also gives you an indication of the quality by giving a score. Higher score is better; a good result should at least be over 80 in quality score.

8X DVD+R DL writing speed:

The Lite-On SHW-1635S uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD+R DL at 8x. The average speed is 6.93x and total writing time is 17:13 minutes.

4x DVD-R DL writing speed:

The Lite-On SHW-1635S uses CLV, (Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD-R DL at 4x. The average speed is 4.01x and total writing time is 27:43 minutes.

WRONG!!! - "The Lite-On SHW-1635S uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD-R DL at 4x. The average speed is 4.01x and total writing time is 27:43 minutes."

It surely looks like CLV to me ... also the image says the same!

Very concerned about the dip during the 16x burns which results in a jump in jitter ... also overall high jitter, which usually mean poorly tuned writestrats and also lower disc lifetimes. Also - overall quality was shocking with some discs.

Wonder why you used a BenQ to scan? For speed only? I find BenQ tend to be less sensitive on some dyes (RICOHJPNR01 in my experience has less errors on BenQ than LiteOn) and heavily error on some others. Still trusting a LiteOn. Your efforts are appreciated a lot!
Why on earth NEC are moving to Lite-on internals is beyond me, the first look at the NEC Super-Multi ND-4550A was much more appealing.
In South Korea, 1635s still costs about US$10 more than 1693S. :(
Circuit City has the Drive available on their website for $89.99, with Free Shipping. You can find it by searching for "SHW-1635S". None are available in stores yet in the USA.
