For this article we will be using two computers with the following configuration:

- Motherboard: ECS Elitegroup N2U400-A with Nvidia nForce 2 Ultra-400 and nForce MCP chipset.
- Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton) 333 MHz FSB.
- RAM: 1 GB Infineon PC2700 DDR
- GFX: ATI Radeon 9600 XT
- Sound: Onboard C-Media AC97
- Hard disk: Seagate Barracuda ST3250823A 250 GB
Software:
Windows XP Professional is installed on both computers along with Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. We will be using the following software:
Test Drives:
In this 1st look article we are going to use the following 8x DVD+R DL capable DVD-Writers:
- BenQ DW 1640
- Lite-On SHW-1635S
- NEC ND-4550A
- Pioneer DVR-110D
Write Strategies:
Let us take a look at the write strategies:

The BenQ 1640 uses P-CAV (Partial-Constant Angular Velocity), to write at its maximum speed of 8X. The average writing speed is 7.17x, with a total time of 16 minutes and 20 seconds.

The NEC ND-4550A uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity), to write at its maximum speed of 8X. The average writing speed is 6.57x, with a total time of 18 minutes and 39 seconds.
