| Description | Using your game's original CD or DVD, create a Game Jackal profile that enables you to play without the CD in the drive. |
Conclusion:
In my review of version 1 I stated,
'Well there you have it. Possibly great piece of software in the future. At present it just seems too hit and miss. If they get the bugs sorted and get more games to work with it then it is certainly a program I would buy. All I can say is keep on updating it."
Well they have, and now it is probably the easiest way of playing your games without the need for the disk. If a patch comes out all you need to do is rebuild the profile again and off you go. Fantastic.
Obviously for me the issues with SecuROM forcing me to do a reinstall are an issue but hopefully this is something that can be found and fixed in updates in the near future.
The other main issue is still the letter of my drives. I have three optical drives, various network drives which can change, 2 removable drives and up to 4 virtual drives on some occasions. I do tend to forget which drive is which at times so the addition of the names of the drives would be a big help.
Game Jackal is defiantly moving in the right direction and with new features like Guardian Control is defiantly a program that will allow parents to limit what there children can play and for how long. Couple this with the low cost of Game Jackal and you have a very attractive package for playing your games.
In all this is a massive jump forward from version 1. This version really does seem to be able to create a profile for just about any game and copy protection and let you play it. It has also been stated by the developers that they are working on Tages and StarForce, so soon any game you have will be playable without the disk or disconnecting your drives.
All I can really finish with is that Game Jackal has now come of age.
To complete this review off I submitted a couple of questions to the developers of GameJackal regarding some of the operations of the program and future developments of the program. Below are the questions I asked along with their responses.
At present there is no support for Tages or StarForce within GameJackal. Is this something that is being looked into?
We are always looking at ways to improve the percentage of game titles that Game Jackal can successfully profile. We do not target specific copy protections but carefully designed a technology that this aligned with Windows operating system and provides the benefit of CD Free Gaming. The motivation for our product is to give the legitimate user a means of protecting their gaming asset as well as convenience. It is important to note that our product inherently prevents copying of games and users must have the original game CD.
With the recent release of version 2.0 Game Jackal covers more than 90% of gaming titles that includes the most recent and most popular releases.
SecuROM have just launched version 7 of their copy protection software. Will GameJackal still be able to make profiles for this new version?
We have only had one report on our forum where a user did not successfully profile a game that uses this new technology. We will know more very soon.
Are there any additional features that you are planning to add in the upcoming versions?
Since the launch of version 2 we have been planning and developing version 2.5. This new version will contain two exciting features:-
1) One-click profile creation. The one area in which Game Jackal has always excelled has been it's easy of use, However we are always looking to streamline and improve the profile creation process. This new feature allows the user to create a profile by simply right-clicking on an existing game's shortcut and selecting "Convert to Game Jackal profile".
2) Integration with third party applications. Since the launch of the very first version of Game Jackal we have had many requests from users regarding integration with other applications. This feature is the first step toward this, and will allow Game Jackal users to launch game images created with other applications. Game Jackal will therefore provide a common "launch pad" for all the user's games.
In addition we will continue to update the product to offer increased game support.
On the forums there is a section dedicated to games that will and will not run with GameJackal. Are there any plans to create a quick reference version of this for users for quick and easy viewing?
Our forum is there to allow users to openly discuss the pros and cons of our product, discuss issues with other users and the Game Jackal team and to offer suggestions for future enhancements. We certainly welcome any new suggestion including the idea to setup a quick reference version of the supported games. Consider it added to the to-do list!
On your website you announced that you were working in tandem with Aardwork Software (Developers Of GameShadow) to" develop an integrated solution for PC Gamers during the coming months", Is there any news on this yet?
Both the Game Jackal and the Game Shadow teams have independently been hard at work producing the next respective versions of their products over the past months. Now that we have launched Game Jackal Version 2.0 and have some time up our sleeves we hope to collaborate further with the Game Shadow guys on the possibility of an integrated product.

first - "It has also been stated by the developers that they are working on Tages and StarForce"
then the answer to your first developers' question indicates otherwise - "We do not target specific copy protections..."
So, which is the case?
Otherwise good work, certainly looks like an interesting program.
