DVD-R media compatibility and write quality:

Since HP has limited the DVD-R writing speeds to up to 8x on the HP dvd640e DVD Writer we have limited our testing to 5 different certified 8x medias. In these tests, we will be using the Mad Dog 16XDVD9 to read back the DVD-R's and the Plextor PX-712A to read back the DVD-RW's.

Nice write quality. The reading curve is perfect.

To sum it up: Overall, the write quality is not good on DVD-R. Only two of the five tested media could be read back. However the write quality on DVD-RW media is quite good.
