The HP dvd640e DVD Writer supports the DVD+R9 DL standard for writing Double Layer discs with a size of 8.5 GB at a writing speed of 2.4x. Let us first take a look at the media's we will use:

Verbatim media

The HP dvd640e DVD Writer used 45 minutes and 54 seconds for writing the Mitsubishi Kagaku media at 2.4x. Let us take a look at the K-Probe result:

The result is very good. Now it's time to take a look at some reading tests with various DVD-Writers.

First we will try to read the discs back in the HP dvd640e DVD Writer drive:

As we could see, the HP dvd640e DVD Writer had no problems reading the disc. Let us try some other drives to read the Double Layer discs:

The Plextor DVDR PX-712A shows no problems reading the disc.

The layer break causes problems. Now it's time to take a look at some reading tests with various DVD-Writers.

The HP dvd640e DVD Writer could not even begin to read it's own burn.

The Plextor PX-712A shows problems at the layer break but is able to finish the read.

Let's compare the HP dvd640e DVD Writer with other DL capable drives.

The DVD+R9 DL media (Book Type: DVD-ROM) was tested for playback compatibility on the following players:

         Pioneer DV-656A

         SONY Playstation 2

Compatibility results: 

Both devices played the HP dvd640e DVD Writer burned DVD+R9 DL media without problem.

Summary: Very good quality on the Verbatim DL media but the RiDATA media showed high PIF errors on the second layer and playback suffered because of it.
