Introduction

Just to compare with another popular player, all that the DViCo M-6500a should have been in aesthetics is what we get with the Markus 800. Our first impression is excellent and we don't even care the unit is fully plastic, so far... Aesthetically this has to be one of the most impressive looking media players that we have reviewed so far at MPC.

Media Player Markus 800

From the glossy black case which has nearly the same dimensions and shape of the DViCo M-6500a to the forward thinking two inch LCD color screen. Taken in as a OEM device, produced by Korean Novatron, the Canadian Hantech company who were founded in 1998, has packed the Markus 800 in an equally impressive box which boasts all of the capabilities of the player. Quotes like “Full 1080p”, MKV, H264, TP, TRP and TS playback, not forgetting the SD stuff like .ISO, .IFO, .VOB etc.

Hantech even state that it is capable of playing original DVD through an externally connected USB DVD player due to the CSS license rights. We‟ll see about that later on…

Could this player be the turning point where designers have thought about eye candy along with the capabilities of the player? Certainly from first impressions this seems to be the case - and should be the case, as the DViCo 4100/5100 are based on the same Sigma processor and can handle Full 1080p playback. But, let's not jump to conclusions. We'll take a little time out to throw on a few HD and SD movies, pop some popcorn and kick back with a notepad and sharpened pencil to review the Hantech Markus 800.

Reactions on this item
CONS: Player rejects latest firmware (v 118) from Hantec, fast forwards through mkv files horribly (frequently stopped 30 minutes before or after the scene I would be fast forwarding through), drops the sound for high definition mpeg2 files.

PRO: Does a fantastic job recognizing files on USB devices, plays standard video beautifully but I didn't purchase the device to play standard video.

As is, I cannot recommend this device for anyone looking for a device that plays HD files.
I now own a Markus 800 and experience the same problems during playback of files.
Does not play sound during HD MWV, stops frquently during playback of any file.
Also had a problem updating the firmware had to return the unit to Hantech, service was excellent. However questions about the playback of certain files are just neglected and not answerd!
Would not recommend this problem at all!
