Reading Performances

For these tests we will use Nero CD/DVD-Speed to read various CD and DVD’s, including audio discs and DVD-media. As already mentioned in the introduction, the specifications states that the drive supports reading:

  • BD: 4.8x max
  • DVD : 16x max
  • CD : 40x max

CD-ROM Pressed discs:

For this test we used an original pressed CD-ROM disc containing Pinnacle Studio 7 install CD that is about 75 minutes long. Below you can see the Transfer Rate test result:

The LG GBW-H10N reads CD-ROM disc at 40x. Let’s compare the result with other drives performance in the table below:

The LG GBW-H10N is a fast reader compared to other Blu-ray drives and seek times are low reading pressed CD-ROM discs.

CD-Recordable Discs:

For this test we used a Data CD-R that was made using Nero CD-DVD Speed “create data disc”. The disc we used was a Verbatim 52x certified CD-R disc manufactured by Mitsubishi.

The LG GBW-H10N reached 40x when reading a full CD-R disc. Now let us compare the result to some other drives:

The LG GBW-H10N is fast when reading CD-R discs.

CD-Rewritable discs:

Again, we made a Data CD with Nero CD-DVD Speed “create data disc”. This time we used a Maxell High Speed (12X) CD-RW disc made by Ritek Corporation.

The drive reads CD-RW discs at 40x speed. Check how this compares to other drives below.

The LG GBW-H10N performed very fast on reading CD-RW discs.

Audio – Digital Audio Extraction:

To test the digital audio extraction performance of the LG GBW-H10N, again we used Nero CD-DVD Speed to measure the transfer rate. The audio disc we used is 65:49.50 minutes in length (Devotion: the Best of Yanni, 1997).

The LG GBW-H10N reached 40x reading Audio-CD. Now let us compare the result with other drives:

The LG GBW-H10N reads Audio-CD discs very fast compared to other Blu-ray drives.

Advanced audio – DAE quality test:

For this test we used the “Advanced DAE Quality Test” feature in Nero CD-DVD Speed. We first created a Test Disc and then run the DAE Quality Test afterwards. The CD-R media we used is a 40x certified Memorex Music CD-R made by Ritek. (Thanks to Memorex USA for sending us this media.)

The extracting quality is excellent and it should support everything except reading data from the Lead-out. The drive is also too slow for 16x on-the-fly copying.

DVD reading performance:

Again, we will use Nero CD-DVD Speed to measure the reading performance, this time for various types of DVD discs.

DVD – DVD-ROM:

According to the specifications, the LG GBW-H10N reads pressed DVD-ROM SL at 16x. For this test we used ”Gran Turismo 3” (PS2), which has 3.61GB of data.

DVD-ROM

The LG GBW-H10N reads the disc smoothly at nearly 16x speed.

DVD – DVD-Video:

For our DVD reading performance tests we are going to start with a single and Double Layered DVD video discs. While only 1X speed is required to watch DVD movies, it’s useful to be able to read the discs at higher speeds if you’re going to extract (rip) the content of the disc to your hard drive.

DVD-Video Single Layer

DVD-Video Double Layer

The LG GBW-H10N reads pressed DVD-Video Single and Double layer discs at 8x.

The LG GBW-H10N performed very well with our DVD-Video Single Layer and Double Layer read tests.

DVD – DVD+R/RW:

For this test we used a Verbatim 16x DVD+R and a Verbatim 8x DVD+RW with 4.38GB of data. (Thanks to Verbatim USA for sending us this media.) Below are the results:

DVD+R

DVD+RW

The LG GBW-H10N reads DVD+R/RW discs at 10x.

The drive performed very fast when reading DVD+R/RW discs.

DVD – DVD-R/RW:

For this test we used a Verbatim 16X DVD-R disc and a Verbatim 6X DVD-RW disc filled with 4.38GB of data. (Thanks to Verbatim USA for sending us this media.) Our test results are found below:

DVD-R

DVD-RW

The drive reads DVD-R/RW disc at 10x speed.

The drive performed fast when reading DVD-R and DVD-RW discs.

DVD – DVD±R DL:

For this test we used a Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL disc and a Ridata 6X DVD-R DL disc filled with 4.38GB of data. (Thanks to Verbatim USA and Advanced Media/Ridata for sending us these media.) Our test results are found below:

DVD+R DL

DVD-R DL

The drive reads DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL at 8x speed.

The drive performed above average when reading DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs.

DVD – DVD-RAM:

For this test we used a Maxell 5x DVD-RAM filled with 4.27GB of data. Our test results are found below:

DVD-RAM

The LG GBW-H10N reads DVD-RAM at 5x in 12:06 minutes without any problem.

The LG GBW-H10N performed similar with the other Blu-ray drives when reading DVD-RAM. Seek times are good.

Mini DVD-R

For this test we used a Memorex 4x Mini DVD-R filled with 1.36GB of data. Our test results are found below:

Mini DVD-R

The LG GBW-H10N reads Mini DVD-R at 10x in 2:03 minutes without any problem.

Mini DVD+RW

For this test we used a Memorex 4x Mini DVD+RW filled with 1.36GB of data. Our test results are found below:

Mini DVD+RW

The LG GBW-H10N reads Mini DVD+RW at 8x in 2:29 minutes without any problem.

Blu-ray Reading performance:

According to the specifications, the drive supports reading BD-ROM at 4.8x, BD-R at 4x, and BD-RE at 2x.

BD – BD-ROM:

For this test we used a Single Layer BD-ROM disc of High Definition Blu-ray movie (House of Flying Daggers) with 23.19GB of data. Our test results are found below:

BD-ROM

The LG GBW-H10N reads BD-ROM Single Layer at 4.8x without any issue.

BD – BD-R SL:

For this test we used a Verbatim BD-R media filled with 22.56GB of data. (Thanks to Verbatim USA for sending us this media.) Our test results are found below:

BD-R SL

The LG GBW-H10N reads BD-R Single Layer 25GB at 4x without any issue.

BD – BD-RE SL:

For this test we used a Verbatim BD-RE media filled with 22.56GB of data. (Thanks to Verbatim USA for sending us this media.) Our test results are found below:

BD-RE SL

The LG GBW-H10N reads BD-RE Single Layer 25GB at 2x without any issue.

Now it’s time to head on to an interesting part: Writing CD-R and CD-RW discs…

Looks like we should continue to wait for the prices to fall and improvements to keep coming on these drives.
WoW, even Memorex Media are Made in Japan, this drive is made in Korea?? how disappointing
What?? No DL support - why would I even buy this if the most promising feature is not available. Meh. :r
Where is guide how I can make disc quality test with blu-ray?
