  • Generally good DVD-R/±RW writing quality and performance.
  • Very fast 48x CD-R and 32x CD-RW writing
  • Very fast at writing DVD±R DL media.
  • Can burn selected DVD±R media faster than its rated speed.
  • Excellent reading performance and reliability.
  • Supports BitSetting (BookType DVD-ROM) on DVD+R/DL.
  • Can read and write mini DVD media.

Negative:

  • CD-RW and DVD±RW writing quality could be improved.
  • Disc quality (C1/C2, PI/PO) scanning is not supported
  • Slow 6X reading of single-and double-layer DVD-Video discs

Let us summarize the most important positive and negative points below:

The main positive points:

The LG GH22LP20 is a fast drive as far as writing CD-R and DVD±R media                                                    is concerned, recording some of the fastest times on DVD±R discs burned in our reviews.

The LG GH22LP20 wrote our tested DVD±R/±RW/DL media with generally very good quality.

The LG GH22LP20 was also able to burn selected DVD±R media at faster than its rated speed.

The LG GH22LP20 is a reasonably well built drive. Noise levels, even at 22X are not intrusive and DVD-Video playback noise levels are low.

The main negative points:

CD-RW (high speed 32X) writing quality on the LG GH22LP20 needs to improve.

DVD-Video extraction at 6X speed is slow compared to other drives.

To sum up, this is what we would say:

LG GH22LP20 is a solid performer and an excellent choice for reliable CD and DVD burning at record speeds. It effortlessly produces quality burns faster than most other drives to date. We highly recommend it.

Nice review, but why are some images saved in 8-BIT color depth? They look awful.
Nice review, however I would like to see the drive internals. :B

The test results are not presented in a clear manner. I will use the Verbatim DVD as my example.

The write speed is given as 22x and the write time is given as 4:27. This indicates that the actual write performance is about 12x. The data should be labeled more explicitly and given in comparable units. The way the data is presented here, it is impossible to compare the selected write speed with the actual performance without doing a lot of math.

For example, what is now labeled "Write Speed" should be labeled "Write Speed (Selected)"

What is labeled as "Write Time" should be labeled "Write Speed (Actual)" and should be presented in the same units as "Write Speed (Selected)".
