| Description | 18x Super Multi DVD Rewriter |
Test machine
We will be using a computer with the following configuration:
Hardware

Controller and optical drives

LG GSA-H50N is connected to the motherboard's ICH6 south bridge parallel ATA port.
It identifies itself as "HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GSA-H50N."
DMA (Direct Memory Access) is enabled, and connection mode is reported as Ultra DMA Mode 4:

Drive transfer mode
CD-DVD Speed reports burst rate of 31 MB/s, consistent with Ultra DMA Mode 4. 31 MB/a is a little on the slow side for UDMA Mode 4 but it is more than sufficient for 18x burning:

Burst rate
Software
The computer is running Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit (build 6.0.6000).
We will be using the following software:
- Nero CD/DVD Speed version 4.7.5.0
- K-Probe version 2.5.2
- Nero Info Tool version 4.4.0.0
- Nero Burning ROM version 7.9.6.0
- Slysoft CloneCD 5.3.0.1
Installation
Drive installation was uneventful. We set the jumper to "cable select" and let the two drives sharing an ATA cable pick master and slave modes automatically.
Features
Nero InfoTool reports the following configuration and drive features:

Nero InfoTool report
The drive's hardware memory buffer used to ensure uninterrupted recording is the standard 2 MB. This amounts to less than 1/10th of a second worth of data at 18x DVD speed, but the drive maintains steady buffer levels (represented by the green line below) at all speeds:

Firmware update
Our drive came with firmware revision 1.00, but we have updated to version 1.01 when it became available:

Firmware flash (2 of 5)

Firmware flash (3 of 5)

Firmware flash (4 of 5)

One thing I would advise against is using any LG drive for TRT. Those drives have no problems with extremely poor burns. I have had a severely degraded Ritek G05 that would not read at all in any of my liteons, I put it in my LG and it did not slow down once during the rip. I've noticed this on a number of poorly burnt discs in the past and I have two LG drives to confirm that they are very good readers, too good when it comes to TRT.

Many things besides the quality of the disc can go wrong at high reading speeds. 16x DVD speeds mean interpreting 56 meters/180 feet per second of track covered with microscopic bumps. It makes me think of reading highway signs written in Braille - at supersonic speeds
The whole thing is a bit of a black art... a reading test can show a hint of a problem where the quality test sees none, and vice versa. The best we can do is to pick one reading drive for a review and stick with it until there is an apparent contradiction between a quality test and a reading test, as was the case here.
