Protected data test

Protected data test:

Now we will try the ability to make backups of protected data discs. First we used ClonyXXL v2.0.0.6 to scan the discs for protections. You can download ClonyXXL at home.arcor.de/bejot.

Then we made a copy with both CD-Mate 2.2.5.10 and CloneCD 4.0.0.1. Then we tested the backup in several drives. Settings used: In CloneCD we created our own profiles, in CD-Mate we used the premade profiles for each protection. Let us take a look at the protections that we are going to test:

Laserlok:

The game we used was Desperados. Laserlok is not so much used anymore since it's relatively easy to bypass. But it's very hard to read and most readers uses long time to read it, sometimes as much as several hours. We created a CloneCD profile for this protection that you may download here. The profile was made to give the best performance possible when reading laserlok protected discs.

Safedisc:

The game we used was Dungeon Keeper 2. Safedisc is pretty old now and not very hard to bypass with todays updated programs. Download the CloneCD profile we used for this protection here. The profile was made to give the best read performance with safedisc protection.

Safedisc 2:

The game we used was Max Payne. Safedisc 2 is an improved version of safedisc which have bad sectors in a very special pattern which makes it hard for several writers to write the bad sectors correctly. Newer versions of CD-Mate and CloneCD have software tricks to allow these sectors to be written correctly with most writers. Download the CloneCD profile that we used for this protection here. We wrote the disc with Amplify weak sectors (CloneCD) and Sector amplification mode (CD-Mate) disabled.

Safedisc 2 version 2.51.021:

The game we used was Serious Sam: Second Encounter. Safedisc 2.51.021 is one of the newer safedisc protections which have two more sectors that is hard to write for most writers. Even more writers was defeated when this protection entered the market. But again CloneCD have a software tricks that makes many writers able to backup this protection. Download the profile we used for this protection here. We wrote the disc with amplify weak secotors (CloneCD) and sector amplification mode (CD-Mate) disabled.

Tagé¨s:

The tagé¨s disc we used was motoracer 3. Tagé¨s uses a very special protection that is added during the manufacturing process. So far no writers/programs have been able to backup this protection. Download the CloneCD profile we used for this protection here.

Securom new:

The disc we used was Diablo 2: Lord of destruction. The securom protection is in the subchannel, so it requires the subchannel to be read and wrote. Download the CloneCD profile we used for this protection here. We had game patch version 1.09D installed.

Here is a table to see our result:

Summary:

It was not the fastest reader we have seen but it did fair enough when reading. And writing was good. The drive produced working safedisc 2 and safedisc 2.51.021 backups without the need for Amplify weak sectors (CloneCD) or sector amplification mode (CD-Mate) which means it fully supports 'correct EFM encoding of regular bit-patterns". In total the drive did very good when it comes to making game backups.

Protected music discs.

Let us see if the drive is able to read protected music discs. Program that we will use is CloneCD, Exact Audio Copy and Feurio. First we will try a Cactus data shield 100 disc:

The disc we used was: Westlife: World of our own.

CloneCD: We used the read music profile. We also tried various other settings without luck, the result was still the same: We were unable to read any data from the disc.

Feurio: We did not succeed in getting the content shown, we always got 'Error when reading directory of CD".

EAC: Was able to see all the tracks but was unable to read anything from the disc.

Key2audio:

The disc we used was: Celine Dion: A new day has come, which has one of the latest Key2Audio versions.

Result: None of the programs worked since the drive couldn't detect the disc at all.

Summary:

This drive is unable to read protected audio discs. You'd better get another drive or use another drive as the reader if this is one of your main usages.

But let us see how good the drive is at writing CD-RW discs and test the buffer underrun technology...

Very nice review OC-Freak! Enjoyed reading it. Oh and nice pics by the way ;)
The pics were really a pain in the ass to get them right in the backend system ;)

Great review though.
In order to backup Cactus Data Shield Audio CD's. I've found it helps to insert the CD with autorun enabled and allow it to start the built-in player. Stop the player, load CloneCD and copy the CD (make sure you don't have any fast error skip stuff enabled). This (for me at least) results in a copy of the CD which completely works 100% (and in fact can be backed up or ripped perfectly). :)
I have the 40x write version of this drive but can only reach around 20x in EAC burst mode.

Any ideas what's wrong?
