Writing tests

Writing tests:

Here we will do several write transfer tests with Nero Burning ROM and CloneCD and compare the results to other drives with similar specifications. This is the media we used for the tests:

80min disc: Memorex 24X certified.
  • ATIP: 97m 15s 17f
  • Disc Manufacturer: Ritek Co.
  • Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
  • Media type: CD-Recordable
  • Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
  • Nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f / LBA: 359849)
74min disc: Acer multispeed.
  • ATIP: 97m 22s 66f
  • Disc Manufacturer: Acer Media Technology, Inc.
  • Reflective layer: Dye (Short strategy; e.g. Phthalocyanine)
  • Media type: CD-Recordable
  • Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
  • Nominal Capacity: 653.76MB (74m 25s 00f / LBA: 334725)
We'll start with Nero burning ROM. The compilation had 79minutes and 40 seconds with data. The disc was made with these settings: Disc-At-Once write method and Finalize CD checked. This gave us this result in Nero when writing at 24X:

As we could see it used 4 minutes and 16 seconds to create the disc.

Then we used CloneCD to make an image of the disc we just created with Nero to get the exact same size. Then we wrote the disc and here is the result:

CloneCD was able to write the disc in 3 minutes and 58 seconds, not bad at all.

Now that we have seen the write times lets compare the result with several other drives. All tests was done with Nero burning ROM with Disc-At-Once write method and finalize CD checked.

The drive did well as a writer, only a few seconds slower than the other 24X writer. Of course it can't compete with the 24X yamaha since it uses P-CAV technology. Also the 24X and 32X drives can't be compared to the TEAC CD-W540E since it have a higher start speed. Check out our Teac review here.

Disc readability:

It's no use to have fast writers if the created discs are no good quality, so here we will try some different discs and check the results with Nero CD-Speed ScanDisc function. The discs was spun up before the ScanDisc test was run since some drives may report c2 errors while spinning up. We created both a disc containing data and a disc containing music. The discs was created at the max speed that the smartburn technology allowed, which means that some of the discs was written at a higher speed than what they are certified for. We do not recommend writing any CD-R disc at a speed higher than what it is certified for.

Summary:

Stick to high quality media that is certified for the speed you are going to write at. It was only the old multimedia masters & machinery CD-R disc and the Imation(CMC Magnetics) disc that gave us problems. Still it seems like CMC Magnetics is one of the worse CD-R disc manufacturers out there so we recommend that you look for other brands those manufactured by CMC Magnetics when shopping CD-R discs.

Now let us see how well the drive performs when it comes to backing up protected data and audio…

Very nice review OC-Freak! Enjoyed reading it. Oh and nice pics by the way ;)
The pics were really a pain in the ass to get them right in the backend system ;)

Great review though.
In order to backup Cactus Data Shield Audio CD's. I've found it helps to insert the CD with autorun enabled and allow it to start the built-in player. Stop the player, load CloneCD and copy the CD (make sure you don't have any fast error skip stuff enabled). This (for me at least) results in a copy of the CD which completely works 100% (and in fact can be backed up or ripped perfectly). :)
I have the 40x write version of this drive but can only reach around 20x in EAC burst mode.

Any ideas what's wrong?
