DVD reading performance

DVD reading performance:

Again we will use Nero CD-Speed to measure the reading performance, this time for various types of DVD discs. The drive should read pressed single layer DVD-discs at 12X.

DVD - DVD-Video:

For our DVD reading performance tests we are going to start with a single and dual layered DVD video discs. While only 1X speed is required to watch DVD movies, it's useful to be able to read the discs at higher speeds if you're going to extract (rip) the content of the disc to your hard drive. Notice: Even if some of these discs contains DVD-Video they are identified as DVD-ROM discs for a reason or another, it's a disc issue and not a drive issue, we did several tests and this do not seem to affect the results of the tests in any way.

The Lite-On LDW-811S had no problems reaching 12x for the single layer disc. And as usual for Lite-On drives - dual layer reading speed is limited to 8x.

*Notice that newer versions of CD-speed actually report the highest speed as the end reading speed for the dual layer disc.

Compared to the other drives it's quite competitive and has no speed limit for reading DVD-video discs.

DVD - DVD+R(W):

For this test we used a Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD+R and a Ricoh 4X DVD+RW with about 4,4Gb of data. Below are the results:

The reading speed was locked to 6x for both DVD+R and DVD+RW, comparison with other drives is found below.

Due to the lower read speed of only 6x it's among the slower drives in this test.

DVD - DVD-R/RW:

For this test we used a Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-R disc and a Memorex 2X DVD-RW disc filled with about 4,4Gb of data. Our test results are found below:

As we could see out from these graphs, the drive performed nearly the same with DVD-R/RW discs as with DVD+R/RW discs. Below is a comparison table:

Again it's among the slower drives due to 6x read speed limit.

To sum up the reading performance: It's good for data and audio discs as well as pressed DVD-Discs. But we would like to see higher reading speeds on recorded DVD-Media and on CD-RW discs.

But now it's time to head on to a more interesting part: Writing CD-R discs…
