Re Writing performance

The Lite-On LDW-811S supports writing Ultra-Speed CD-RW discs at 24x speed. It supports writing DVD+RW discs at 4x and DVD-RW discs at 2x.

Re-Writing data:

For this test we set up a new compilation containing 650Mb of data in Nero Burning ROM. We used the DAO (Disc At Once) writing method. In the screenshot below you can see that the burn process completed successfully.

The Lite-On LDW-811S used 3 minutes and 44 seconds for writing the disc at 24X, let us compare this to some other writers; The Plextor PX-708A used 3 minutes and 39 seconds to write the disc and the Lite-On LDW-411S used 3 minutes and 43 seconds to write the disc. As we could see there is only seconds in difference between these drives.

And here is the writing time for writing 4.4Gb of data to a 2X Memorex DVD-RW disc:

The drive used 29 minutes and 25 seconds to write the disc at 2X. Compared to the NEC ND-2500A (used 28 minutes and 31 seconds to write the disc) and the Lite-On LDW-411S (used 29 minutes and 22 seconds to write the disc). This makes it about a minute slower than the NEC ND-2500A.

And finally here is the writing time for writing 4.4Gb of data to a Ricoh 4X DVD+RW disc:

The Lite-On LDW-811S used 14 minutes and 13 seconds to write the disc, as a comparison the Aopen DRW-4410 used 14 minutes and 57 seconds and the NEC ND-2500A used 13 minutes and 52 seconds. This makes it slightly slower than the NEC but faster than the Aopen drive.

CD-RW Packet writing:

Now it's time to take a look at the packet writing performance of the NEC Lite-On LDW-811S. We used Sonic DLA 4.5 to write 401 MB (421 003 264 bytes) data to the disc.

We have had a hard time finding a packet writing program that would work as expected, right now Sonic DLA have proven to be the best although it's not perfect either as it may conflict with Nero and InCD. It will not even install unless you uninstall Nero and InCD. The result is right where it should be compared to the other drives.

DVD-RW/DVD+RW packet writing tests:

We used Sonic DLA 4.5 to format and write 2Gb (2 217 820 160 bytes) data to the disc.

There is really no difference in DVD Packet writing performance and all drives performed very well.

Writing Quality with Re-Writable discs:

Due to request from our readers we will add a few write quality tests with Re-Writable media. Settings and testing procedures is the same as used earlier in this review so you may want to go back and read them if unsure. All discs used for these tests have been written to before, but none have been written to more than 25 times.

Not the best result we have had with these CD-RW discs, but remember that we can't expect the amount of errors to be as low as for CD-R discs. All in all it's not that bad as there is no C2 errors. We do not have any other 24x CD-RW discs available for testing

The overall amount of errors was very low, but the JLMS XJ-HD165H had a hard time reading the disc. This may be due to the fact that RW discs are harder to read though.

As we could see the drive did much better with this disc and there were no problems with reading the disc back at full speed. Highly recommended discs.

Another good result, but it's disappointing that this disc is not supported at more than 2.4x. Let us hope that Lite-On is able to bring out firmware upgrade to fix this.

Even if the amount of errors is relatively low there are still some problems reading the disc back, this is probably due to the fact that ReWritable discs is harder to read than Recordable discs.

Use these disc if wants to waste your money. The drive detected and wrote the disc ok but afterwards the disc is not detected by any drives. And since it's not detected it can't be erased and used again either. This disc had to go right into the trash bin. Oh well, not to surprising as the only drive we have been able to use these discs in is the Pioneer DVR-106D, all other drives (BTC, Plextor, LG and NEC drives) refuses to write or is trashing the discs. Definitively stay away from these discs.

To sum it up: Rewritable discs seem to be harder to read than Recordable discs. But when looking at the amount of errors there should not be any problems. We have done a few tests with other drives and this drive does not seem to be any worse than most other drives.

Before we round off this review, let us run the drive through some advanced tests at next page…
