Rewrite tests

CDRW tests

The last feature we have to check is the rewrite function of this drive. This new LiteOn supports high-speed rewriting 4x10x and is of course backwards compatible with 2x4x. For the test we formatted the rewritable discs with Ahead InCD V3.14.0. While we are having 2x4x cdrw-media and high-speed 4x10x cdrw-media we encountered another difference in rewritable media: CDRW with a different capacity. They are hard to find but they exist: 80min CDRW. 74min CDRW-media is specified thus widly spread, 80min CDRW-media isn't. But very interesting to go a little bit deeper on this issue...

CDRW-80min will get you another 43MB extra.

There is even high-speed CDRW-80 min.

Formatting under InCD V3.14.0

After we formatted a 74min CDRW, whether this was high-speed or normal-speed, a free space of 543MB could be found on the disc through explorer.

For the 80min CDRW we received a generous 586MB of empty space. This gave us a profit of 43MB.

We have published 3 tests:
 • The amount of time to format a 700MB 2x4x CDRW
 • The time to format a 700MB 4x10x CDRW
 • The time to transfer a certain amount of files (541MB) under explorer

The formatting is slower than the Plextor, the writing faster...

We have also tested the reading of CDRW's

The reading of a 2x4x CDRW and a 4x10x CDRW gave the same result...

CDRW 8cm media:
This LiteOn writes perfectly 8cm CDRW. An 8cm CDRW was written with 174.5 MB data in 0:05:36 min.

Conclusion:
High speed rewriting is a big breakthrough in costeffective reliable and yet fast storage capacity. This LiteOn is no exeption and delivers what it promises.

Now that we have tested the complete drive, let's draw the final conclusions...

I'm waiting for my LiteOn Drive to arrive :4
The recommanded settings to read sd2 don't work fine for the Litey, that's why the reading time is so bad.
If you set read retries on another value than"0" and error correction"none",CloneCd changes this setting without notifying you to"hardware"
I don't know if this is a limitation of the Litey,or a CloneCd bug,you can verify this by aborting the read and going straight to the error correction settings tab.....You'll find the setting "hardware" as parameter...
Also the Litey is not capable to extract or copy Cactus Data Shield protected audiocd's
I have 1 myself, but would definitely going for the Plex if I knew this earlier...I've tested it under all available firmware,no luck yet...
This Drive is absolutly SUPERB!! It Easily deserves the 94.5% rating. Ive had it for about 3 months now and its been nothing short of Brilliant. Because its sooo fast i dont shy away from burning, nor do i have to because no matter what i do, i cant seem to burn a bad disk !! It cost me £104 GPB. At that time the Plextor was around £160 GPB. Check out www.e-buyer.com where the drive is now priced at £79.98 GBP !!! BARGAIN OR WHAT?
I simply LOVE this drive, iv'e burned 'bout 100 disks with it now using 16x media(@24x] and not one coaster.
The one thing i dont get about the review is the "makes noise" under "what's not so good"...WHAT n o i s e??? I definitely do not have a problem with the dB of this drive and i have tried a few... And what about the "not integrated cooler"???
My guess would be that the drive is designed not to have a "inegrated cooler" and will probably work just fine for many years without it, and if it did have a "integrated cooler" it would probably make a hell of a lot more "noise" then it does without it. . . :)
I love it. Other than not figuring out how to burn CD+G(karaoke) CD's yet, I have had no problem with this burner. And I definately have not heard any noise. If anything would happen to this burner I purchase another one just like it.
I just bought a CenDyne 24x10x40 CDRW:4 and I found out in the device manager it is listed as a Lite-On LTR-24102B:o; It also looks the same but without the blue Lite-On logo or sticker on the tray and as described in this article, it makes noise, has 99min overburn, and is slow when using CloneCD (Reading & DAE extraction) ...This is a Lite-On product but why is it being distributed by CenDyne? :7
I love this drive. Quiet, fast as hell, and I can multitask without any errors. One problem.. Windows XP doesn't recognize it as a cd burner. It says it does but wont show up in Media Player as a device. This really sucks being that media player has got a great setup for automatically uncompressing and burning just about any audio file format. Nero is okay, but not nearly as simple and it doesnt accept .wma files. If anyone has a workaround, please post it! Thanks
Thanks Stevieb for a really informative review.

I WANT ONE :4
I switched from yamaha cd writers to plextor long time ago..then a friend of mine ( a year ago or so.. i don't remember well ) asked me if I wanted to try this Lite On It cd burner. I nevere heard of it at that time but I was curious and so I surfed to www.cdrlabs.com and I carefully read thier hardware reviews regarding plextor and lite on it and i compared them always from a "price" point of view. Convinced about the good quality of lite on it writers I bought one and damn ! I love this brand now !!! They are cheap but they are hig hig quality and I tell you more : I had a 12 10 32 and yes everything was perfect except DAE speed was fixed at 10.5 x ( probably CAV technology ) . Yesterday I bought a 24 10 40 and you know what ? It is really quiet ( even if a bit less quiet compared to the 12 10 32 ) , who cares about the cooling fan ? ( who needs it anymore ? new technology..less heat ... ) and DAE is absolutely superb !! I got a 35.7 dae at the center of the cd ! Strangely it fall down to 20x at the edge of the disc ! Anyway .. I saw on lite on it web site that they've just released a 32 x writers !! I 'll wait 'till it arrives in Italy ! Ciao

ps.. Lite On kicks Plextor butt !
And..something more..may be a bit out of topic ..
Just like Lite On It writers that cost a lot less and gives you a lot more ( and 99% of my friends who use Plextor they don't even know about Lite On writers..damn ignorance ) also when it comes to Cellular Mobile Phones I realized that we pay the brand and not the technology inside the phone. In italy everyone seems to be crazy for Nokia phones.. they cost a lot compared to the thing they give you.. but , anyway , I always had a look for alternative brands ( I own a Philips XENIUM 989 phone with a litium 900 mah battery capable of 550 hours standby new world record but anyway this is not everything ) . Some time ago I've found a french brand called SAGEM and damn they are good and CHEAP.. and when I say CHEAP I mean CHEAP ! I bought a SAGEM MW930 with a 300 hours stand by battery , WAP internet access , T9 easy Script , customizable ( internet downloadable ) ring tones for 28 us $ !!!! NOKIA 3330 has the same features , it weights a lot more , has less stand by time and cost around 135 us $ !!! Can you see the bargain ?

Bye ;)

Plextor writers fail at 92 min .. Lite On It writes 99 min cd perfectly !

:p
I just got one of these things (£80 GBP including delivery from ebuyer.com). What do you mean it reads SD2 slowly? You call 4 minutes slow? (Fast error skip, all other options unchecked, hardware error correction). It doesn't make any noise either, and seems to make much more reliable burns than my last drive (a Creative one). Seems PERFECT, can't imagine anything better (except the 32x model :) ). BUY THIS THING!!!
This drive is my first burner. I've had no problems from installation to backing up protected CDs.
Audio backup quality is excellent.
The drive is quiet and seems very quick, I spend more time waitig for the read to be completed than the write. Definately better to copy without using "on the fly".
One quibble, no detailed manual for Nero (quick guide can be downloaded).:4
Reaction by jasonrocks on Sunday 16 December 2001... You can download .wma plugin for nero @ ahead site... :4
Certainly hope you who have the liteOn drive don't need any tech support, because you won't get it! :4
Hope you LiteOn folks don't need any Tech support, because you certainly won't get! :4
I love the LTR-24102b! It is fairly quiet, it makes a working backup of everything, it is fast enough for most and it extracts protected cd's very quick if you use HARDWARE for FAST ERROR SKIP in CloneCD. It is much cheaper than the Plextor and does the same job unless you absolutely must backup that cd 30 seconds faster than everyone else. But frankly, I am not that fussy. Buy now! :8
I just got a Dell system that came with a Lieon 24102M. What is the difference between the "b" and the "m" model. Is it just a defferent designation because it is OEM ?
Well the only thing I did to make this even better is FIREWIRE. Yes I found an IDE to firewire converter and I can do anything and burn a cd in 4mins. Quiet, reliable and FAST!!!
This drive is the one to get!!!!!!!!!! Easy on the wallet and bulldozes all copy protections. This is a no brainer purchase.
Bulldozes WHAT?
This burner is totally useless for reading Cactus Data Shield CD's (even older CDS100 ones!) with NAY program, if I did not have an Ultraplex 40TSi as well to get out of this stalemate I would have already trashed it.
disappointed cause it cant burn safedisc v2.51
and it wont let me update to the latest firmware.
Do you guys think or have you tried if the Lite-On 32x12x40 can produce the same overburn results?
This thing is awesome. What noise. Its very fast and ive burnt alot of CDR's flawlessly. Great buy. The major problem is with XP. I used nero and it or I have problems burning audio CD's. It burns CDA instead of audio CD's but ive had the same problem with nero with another computer. And Adaptec 5.0 platnium fully upgraded with the Xp upgrade does Not Work. USE RecordMaxNow. It works perfectly with XP and you Can get the Hack if you know where to go.
I have tried to overburn a 720 mb compilation on to 866mb discs with the liteon and Nero 5551. I have adjusted the settings under "preferences" and hit the DAO button but I cannot get the media accepted as more than 703 mb, and Nero keeps kicking me out stating the disc is not big enough. Any suggestions as to how I can proceed??
If you check the overburn box it will still say the cd is too small - then after about 5 seconds a second box appears which gives you an overburn option. (this box appears just before during the burning process itself begins).
Yes, this is because the SlySoft company (responsible for AnyDVD) will be distributing CloneCD online. As of yet a new CloneCD version is not available but when it does it will be put on the SlySoft website. This was done because of a new German law which makes it illegal for Elby to distribute CloneCD via their own website. More information can be read here.
