DVD reading performance:
Again we will use Nero CD-Speed to measure the reading performance, this time for various types of DVD discs. The drive should read pressed single layer DVD-discs at 12X and recordable DVD discs at 6X according to the specifications.
DVD - DVD-Video:
For our DVD reading performance tests we are going to start with a single and dual layered DVD video discs. While only 1X speed is required to watch DVD movies, it's useful to be able to read the discs at higher speeds if you're going to extract (rip) the content of the disc to your hard drive. Notice: Even if some of these discs contains DVD-Video they are identified as DVD-ROM discs for a reason or another, it's a disc issue and not a drive issue, we did several tests and this do not seem to affect the results of the tests in any way.

We can't complain as the drive reached its rated speed of 12X on the single layer disc. The dual layer disc was read at just above 6X speed. How this compares to other drives is found in the table below:

*Notice that newer versions of CD-speed actually report the highest speed as the end reading speed for the dual layer disc.
For the single layer discs it's in the middle of the pack, but due to the low speed of only 6x for dual layer discs it's among the slower drives for reading dual layer discs.
DVD - DVD+R(W):
For this test we used a Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD+R and a Ricoh 4X DVD+RW with about 4,4Gb of data. Below are the results:

As the specifications states the drive reads DVD+R and DVD+RW discs at 6X only, how this compares to the competitors is found below:

It came out slower than the LG and Plextor PX-708A due to their higher read speed of 8X, but else it's about as fast as the Memorex and Lite-On.
DVD -
DVD-R/RW:
For this test we used a Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-R disc and a Verbatim 2X DVD-RW disc filled with about 4,4Gb of data. Our test results are found below:

As we could see out from these graphs, the drive performed nearly the same with DVD-R/RW discs as with DVD+R/RW discs. Below is a comparison table:

Nothing changes and it's still about as fast as the Lite-On and the Memorex, but slower than the LG and Plextor.
To sum up the reading performance: For CD reading it's very good but we would prefer a higher reading speed for dual layer discs and recordable DVD discs.
But now it's time to head on to a more interesting part: Writing CD-R discs…
