Advanced Tests

To round off this review we will run some advanced tests on the Memorex DVD+/-RWN16 D2.

Copy protection:

For this test, we will use the Sheep tests made by Alexander Noé. Why is it called sheep test? That is because the symbol of the first 1 to 1 copy program named CloneCD is a sheep. When looking at supported writers, you will notice that the feature list has sheep to indicate if a feature is supported or not. In this case we are interested in the writer's ability to backup/write weak sectors. Also called: 'Correct EFM encoding of regular bit-patterns".

No sheep: Can't backup any safedisc 2 versions without the help of software tricks
1 Sheep: Can backup safedisc 2 up to version 2.4x without software tricks
2 Sheep: Can backup safedisc 2, including version 2.5x
3 Sheep: Can write all possible weak sectors, few if any writers could do this.

One of our forum moderators, Womble, has written a guide concerning the 'Sheep Test" that could be found here.

In the screenshot below we see that the Memorex DVD+/-RWN16 D2 supports all available write and read features in CloneCD:

The Memorex DVD+/-RWN16 D2 supports DAO-RAW96 recording mode. This means that the drive is able to write uncorrected data as well as subchannel data.

Below are our results from the 'Sheep Tests":

Sheep Tests

Reader:

One Sheep Writer
SD2OLD

Yes

Two Sheep Writer
SD251

No

Safedisc Writer
SD290

No

Three Sheep Writer
SHEEP3

No

The Memorex DVD+/-RWN16 D2 qualifies as a one sheep writer, it cannot copy discs protected with Safedisc ver 2.51 and above. This means that this drive will have trouble backing up some copy-protected CD-ROM discs.

Overburning:

To test the overburning capabilities of the Memorex DVD+/-RWN16 D2, we used the overburning test in Nero CD/DVD-Speed.

The maximum capacity that we could reach is 92:57.74 when testing with an 80 minute Ritek CD-R. All attempts with a larger specified capacity resulted in a failure during the overburn testing process.

Mini DVD-R/RW:

To test the mini DVD-R/RW capabilities of the Memorex DVD+/-RWN16 D2, we burned one Memorex mini DVD-R 8cm and one Verbatim mini DVD-RW 8cm.

Memorex 4x Mini DVD-R

Verbatim 2x Mini DVD-RW

The Memorex DVD+/-RWN16 D2 was able to complete the burn process on both disc types with no issues.

As always a very good review. Unfortunately, it will be of limited value as the internal drive was the discontinued 3500 and most purchasers will probably receive the Liteon 1673. It is too bad Memorex couldn't provide a current model.
There were plenty of units released that are based on the 3500.
I'm sure users that have the drive will appreciate the review!
In addition, users that have the 1673S version (which uses the same enclosure) can benefit from viewing the USB2 and Firewire bridge limitations that I have detailed in this review.
I purchased one of these drives, had a $30.00 mail in rebate, mailed it in and received a letter from Memorex stating that I had mailed in the wrong UPC code in, I called the toll free number and was advised that there was two UPC codes on the box and to mail in the other UPC code, I advised the person that after two months I no longer had the box, only the reciept, she kept repeating the same instructions over eveyrtime I told her this, finally I gave up and emailed the only address available, the tech department. It has been a year now with no response, one can assume Memorex needed the 30 bucks more than I, I would do without before purchasing Memorex products, I also tell everyboby I know watch out for Memorex they need your money; as for the drive it is still working as advertised, just not with the low end Memorex discs :r
I've had my 16X external for about a month, burned 3 DVD's and now it won't see DVD's.
Called their "technical support" and got some guy in the Phillipines blaming windoz XP updates.
I'm taking it back to my vendor, getting a credit and buying a Plexitor :)
Bought unit on eBay. It didn't come with an instruction booklet. Anyone have any idea how to get it. Memorex can't help. Thanks :)
