They support pretty much the same, both are missing the lowest write speeds(1X and 2X for the Mitsumi and 1X, 2X and 4X for the Lite-On). I'll give the Mitsumi a thumb up for having a huge 16Mb buffer, which is very useful in older computers so that the buffer underrun technology doesn't need to kick in that often.
The test computer:
- Mainboard:Microstar K7T Turbo-R Limited Edition VIA KT133A
- CPU: AMD Athlon 1,4GHz
- Memory: 512Mb PC133
- OS: Windows XP
- Latest Adaptec ASPI layer installed.
- Ahead Nero 5.5.7.2 and InCD 3.21
- Ahead Nero CD-Speed and Nero Info Tool.
- Transfer Speed
- Elaborate bytes CloneCD 3.3.4.1
- An Chen CD-Mate 2.2.2.6 (thanks to An Chen for providing the program)
- CD-R Identifier1.63
- Exact Audio Copy version 0.9 beta 2
Since we did not receive any user manual for the Mitsumi we can't comment on how good it is, but the one shipped with the Lite-On is rather bad. It just shows the most basic things on how to configure it correctly, we would have liked some more.
We configured the Mitsumi as slave, put it into the computer, connected it as slave on the primary IDE channel, the Lite-on was configured as master on the secondary IDE channel. We booted up and the computer found them both, and in Windows XP we checked that DMA was switched on for them both.

Excellent review! I personally own a mitsumi 4809, and although i do love lite-ons for their excellent EFM burning(i still have my lite-on 12x), the lite-ons in my opinion are not as solidly build as the mitsumi's. One thing i'd like to note is that significantly better burning times were noted when using NTI's cd software. NTI's clock stops right as the drive stops burning(avg of 3:50 burn time for 700 megs), while nero keeps counting all the way until the cd ejects. Maybe some day you can try using NTI's software in your testing. Btw, you guys have the best overall analysis of cd drives on the web... just my 2 cents....

Just one question: why don't you try to read also BAD discs, I mean discs with scratch, dirt and so on... I bought two weeks ago a nice Samsung SW-224. It seams that every horrible disc that I have (audio, CDR and also CDRW) is read as never before! Much better than the burners I tried before: LG 16x, Teac 16x, Artec 24x.
