According to the Mitsumi Website, the drive specifications are the following:

In addition according to the manufacturer, the drive also has the following features:

  • Reads/writes CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs up to 99 minutes
  • Supports Super Speed Write (SSW)
  • Supports the new MITSUMI AEGIS WRITE™ Technology
  • Built-in ExacLink™ Technology to avoid "buffer under run" writing errors
  • Mt. Rainier compatible

    AEGIS Write

AEGIS WRITE is a new technology featured by the Mitsumi CD-RW drives to ensure optimum performance. According to Greek Mythology the term Aegis is used to describe the indestructible shield of Zeus, which protected him from all enemies. In the case of Mitsumi, the term AEGIS stands Anti-coaster Easy Guard Intelligent System. With this feature the drive is able to:

  • Automatically check media quality and set the optimal max speed for the corresponding medium.
  • Automatically optimise to OPC method and select the optimum write strategy from the large capacity database
  • Monitor the writing condition and compensate for optimum laser power by Mitsumi WPC (Write Power Compensation) technology.

The ExacLink Technology is a buffer under-run protection similar to Burn Proof. It enables the drive to conduct successful high speed recording sessions eliminating the chances of ending up with a coaster. Buffer under-runs occur when the data transfer speed from the PC's hard disk drive cannot keep up with the recording speed of the CD recorder. When ExacLink is enabled, writing will be paused during a buffer under-run within the next sector, called the splice sector. Later when the buffer is full, writing can be synchronized to the previously written data. The write stop and start points are programmable within the splice sector.

Here is a screenshot of Nero Info Tool reporting the drive's features:

    Mount Rainier

As you probably most of you know already Mount Rainier is a new international standard developed by Microsoft, Sony, Philips and Compaq, that simplifies the use of CD-RW blank media as storage and exchangeable media, thus making the use of a floppy drive obsolete. This is done having defect management in the drive, by making the drive 2k addressable, by using background formatting, and by standardizing both command set and physical layout.

Mitsumi was the first CD-RW manufacturer to produce a fully M. Rainier compliant drive with the CR-480ATE. So its no surprise that the 485CTE drive is also M. Rainier compliant. The 485CTE drive is shipped with the InCD - Packet Writing software. For more information on the M. Rainier format, read our related article.

    Write method:

Next we'll take a look at which writing methods the Mitsumi uses to write CD-R's. We have used Nero CD Speed to do the write tests. Below are the produced graphs:

The green line indicates the write speed. The yellow line indicates the rotation speed (RPM) that the disc has.

The Mitsumi CR485CTE uses the Z-CLV (Zone Constant Linear Velocity) write method. This means it switches writing speed while in the writing process. In order to accomplish this, the drive's buffer under-run technique has to kick in every time there is a speed increase.

The CR485 uses 4 zones to write the disk:

  • Zone 1: 20x [00-09min]
  • Zone 2: 24x [09-31min]
  • Zone 3: 32x [31-60min]
  • Zone 4: 40x [60-80min]

More information about Z-CLV can be found here.

The drive's speed averages to 29.94x. This is of course higher when compared to the 26.26x average of the CR480ATE, but how does it compare to other 40x drives?

The CR-485CTE turns out to be faster than other 40x drives that use the Z-CLV writing method, like the Plextor P4012A, although it can't beat the TEAC W540E drive. It has also lower average speed compared to drives that use P-CAV (LTR-4012S fw ZSOJ).

The SSW technology allows you to write to blank CD-RW media at 20x, without them being 20x certified. But the media have to be completely blank. If they have been written to again and erased (even fully erased) the rewriting speed will be limited to 12x.

    Super Speed Write (SSW)

As with their 24x drive which was the first to rewrite at 12x, the Mitsumi 485CTE was the first to introduce 20x rewriting, using the CLV method

With drives currently in the market that can rewrite CD-RW disks at 20x repeatedly without any restrictions (as far as the used media are certified for 20x recording), this feature will sound to most of you somewhat obsolete. Don't forget though that this drive was the first to introduce rewriting speeds higher than 12x and that it doesn't require 20x certified CD-RW media. Plus this drive is reported to support 16x-rewriting speeds with Ultra Speed CD-RW media (no Ultra-Speed CD-RW media available yet to check).

:) hey there, just wanted to say that the drives were also sold as a medion md5277
with a 2 yr warranty. It came with nero 5.5
and a very detailed dutch manual. I am now working with firmware 3.0d, and using tdk 800 mb cdrs very happyly with it. Also the svcd burning is working very good with this drive.
