Test Machine:

As this is a standalone DVD Player which is not dependent on a PC to operate, the only thing important in this case is what is used to display the picture as well as to capture the images as screenshots.

Displays:

  • Panasonic PT-AE500E Projector
    • 720p native (1280 x 720)
    • Test using player's SVHS, Component and HDMI outputs
  • Targa Visionary LCD 19-3
    • 1280 x 1024 native
    • 19" Diagonal size
    • Test using VGA and DVI inputs

Capture methods:

  • Hauppauge WinTV 878 PVR (to capture screenshots)
  • NYTECH ND-6360 6.36 Megapixel CCD camera (for partial screenshots of HD modes)

As we have no means of capturing a HD video stream, a digital camera with a tripod is used to capture close-up screenshots to show detail.  Even though the projector is capable of showing 720p at its native resolution, unfortunately the camera cannot capture the colour correctly.  The LCD monitor is also capable of displaying 720p, but it had a drawback in that it stretches the 720p picture to fill the screen, which means that regardless of which source we take photos of, the player's colour rendering cannot be judged based on the photos shown later in this review.
