Conclusion

Positive

  • New user-friendly design
  • Support for burning High-definition media
  • One-click access to a wide range of features from the one interface

Negative

  • Slightly slow startup for the different components
  • More advanced options a little too well-hidden

Conclusion

Nero 8 StartSmart has a fresh, user-friendly design, which I liked. This is a big improvement over Nero 7 StartSmart, and the rich features are easy to access. With a separate plug-in, support for playback and burning of high-definition media has been added, a welcome addition in our opinion.

Although the package may be a little too loaded with features for some, it’s a great option for other users who want one software which will do it all, and it does just what it says on the tin (and more).

On the other hand, the two negative points I found were that each component does take a little while to load, and the advanced options for each part of the software are fairly well-hidden – so a little digging is required to familiarise yourself with those options first.

To sum up, this is what I’d say about the new Nero 8 StartSmart: Although some of the advanced options are quite well hidden, the newly designed software is comfortable to use. There’s something for everyone, from new to more advanced users.

This rounds off our quick look at Nero 8 StartSmart, and its features and enhancements. Please feel free to comment, on the article or the software, in this thread.

First let me say this, When Vista was rolled out companies forced you to upgrade your software to a Vista compatible version. Not Nero! They were the one company that made the current version compatible with Vista. This alone shows that Nero supports their customer base and should be worth some mileage.

As for Nero 8 I find the menu a refreshing change making the application easier to use for the beginner. At first I liked the status message that appeared in the screen showing you what the program was doing. Unfortunately, there are times when it is not completely visable making it hard to read. I would have preferred a text box with a clear background so that it was clearly visable. I would have also like to have seen an option that would toggle the menu on or off for the beginner or advanced user.

Still the new look does make the application friendlier than earlier versions which should broaden it's appeal. Personally, I feel like the application is the Cadillac of the CD and DVD burning apps!
Not sure why I posted two messages so I thought I better delete the duplicate message.

I stuck with nero7 because I had issues with 8 when it 1st came out, perhaps it's time to try it again.
