Copy a Disc:

Now let's take a look at the disc copy function in NeroLINUX

The copy will support either 'copy on the fly" or 'create image and write" methods of copying. Since our Linux system had only one drive available, we were not able to test the 'copy on the fly method"

For this test an audio CD was selected with a total playing time of 79 minutes 20 seconds.

When 'copy Disc" is selected a dialog appears like the one below.

Once we had selected the drive to use, and set the speed and media type, and elected if we should delete the image file created after the burn or keep it. All that was required to start the copy process was to click on the copy button. After doing this the copy process was soon underway.

As we can see from the log file below, the whole process was completed successfully in well under 7 minutes.

The resulting disc was checked using the KDE desktops default CD player 'KsCD" and the disc played flawlessly from start to finish.

Burn An Image File:

Now lets burn a disc from an image file...

The image file created with the 'copy disc" function was used to test out this feature.

It really couldn't be much simpler to create a disc from an image file. Just place a blank CDR or DVD media into the drive and click on the option from the icon or the 'recorder menu".

As we can see from the screen shot below, the task is started in a flash, without the need for any user intervention.

Another success for NeroLINUX, the task completing in just over 5 minutes.

The 'copy disc" function and 'burn image" function worked well, with a minimum of user input required.

Some comments:
- Taste is personnal, but still. 95% of the comments I've read about NeroLinux didn't find the interface elegant ;) A recent version of GTK or Qt would be a serious improvement.
- What's so positive about the fact that NeroLinux is free if you have the Windows-version? If I want to use it, I'll have to buy an expensive Windows-version with far more features. A version I will never use. So that maks NeroLinux really expensive!
- Solid application?! Under Windows, not crashing would be a positive point :B (That's a joke before some starts flaming)

Apart from that, good review. Glad to see there is some interest in Linux-burning. Will you make a K3B-review too? ;)

Generally agree with the reviewer of this software; however, I would use the term "primitive" to describe the interface. Nothing elegant about it.

As for free ... as a registered Nero 6 customer, Ahead never offered me a free copy, but happily accepted my money for a serial number.

And yes, it does need more work. The venerable K3B has more going for it than NeroLinux.
