For this review we will be using a computer with the following configuration:

System set-up:
The Optorite TED80Y1 is connected on the Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller and identifies itself as Optorite TED80Y1 DVD USB Device. Autorun was enabled for the device.
Software:
Windows XP Professional is installed on the computer along with Service Pack 1. We will be using the following software in this review:
Now it's time to take a closer look at the writing technology used by the Optorite TED80Y1:
CD-Recordable:
The Optorite TED80Y1 uses CAV, (Constant Angular Velocity), to write at its maximum rated speed of 24x. This gives an average speed of 18.24x.

CD-Rewritable:
Unfortunately, our Ultra Speed Verbatim 32X CD-RW discs could only be written at 16X with the Optorite TED80Y1. The drive used P-CAV (Partial-Constant Angular Velocity) writing technology to write these Ultra Speed CD-RW discs at 16x**. The average speed is 16.03x.
**Maximum specification for this drive is actually 24x, however it could only burn our Verbatim 32x CD-RW at 16x.

8X DVD+R / 4x DVD-R Writing Speed:
The Optorite TED80Y1 uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD+R at 8x. The average speed is 5.12x and total writing time is 14 minutes and 06 seconds.
The Optorite TED80Y1 uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD-R at 4x. The average speed is 3.77x and total writing time is 17 minutes and 15 seconds. Below are the results from some other drives for comparison:

The Optorite TED80Y1 does not support bitsetting.
Quality Scans:
The Optorite TED80Y1 drive does not support disc scanning.

Nero OEM suite:
This is one of our preferred writing program suites, and Optorite gets a plus in our book for including it. Also include on this disc is PowerDVD 5.0, Adobe Acrobat and the User Manual.
Sonic MyDVD 5.3:
Sonic MyDVD is DVD Authoring software that can be used to create your own home DVD movies.
This rounds out a full featured suite of programs for getting you started with your new drive.
