The media is made by Mitsubishi Kagaku (Media in Taiwan).  Thanks to Philips (The Netherlands) for sending us this media.

Testing procedure: We created an ISO Image of the largest DVD-Video disc we had (Nemo, 7.91 GB (8.495.888.384 bytes)) using DVD-Decrypter. Then we wrote this image file using Nero Burning ROM 6. Below are the results:

Written with Firmware P2.1 and Verbatim branded DL media.

Written with Firmware P2.2 and Philips branded DL media.

Philips DVD1640P used 45 minutes and 59 seconds for writing the Verbatim DVD+R DL at 2.4x, for the Philips branded DL media it used 45 minutes and 56 seconds at 2.4x. Let us take a look at the K-Probe results of the created discs:

Written with Firmware P2.1 and Verbatim DL media.

Written with Firmware P2.2 and Philips DL media.

We can easily see the amount of errors is higher in the 2nd layer of the Verbatim DL Media. On the Philips DL media, the KProbe result is better in avg. PI.

Now it's time to take a look at some reading tests with various DVD-Writers and DVD-ROM drives.

First we will try to read the discs back in the Philips DVDR1640P drive:

Verbatim DVD+R9 DL

Philips DVD+R9 DL

As we could see the Philips drive had no problems reading the discs, but the reading speed is 8x, according to the drive specifications it should be 10x.  Let us try some other drives to read the Dual Layer discs:

Verbatim DVD+R9 DL

Philips DVD+R9 DL

The LG GSA-4120B Dual Layer drive did not have any problems with reading the dual layer discs either.

Verbatim DVD+R9 DL

Philips DVD+R9 DL

As we can see, the discs could be read back without any problems in the Lite-On SOHW-832S Dual Layer Drive, Let's try reading the discs in a Artec/Ultima 16x DVD-ROM:

Verbatim DVD+R9 DL

Philips DVD+R9 DL

An excellent reading curve - close to 11x reading speed, except the Philips branded media, it shows a major speed down just before the layer break.

Standalone DVD-Player compatibility:

We do only have 3 standalone DVD-Players available to test the Philips DVD+R9 DL written DVD (Book Type: DVD-ROM is done automatic by the firmware).

         Aiwa DVD Player XD-DV370

         Medion DVD/Div-X Player MD7457

         Red Star DVD-Player 230G

Compatibility results:

All of the 3 standalone Players played the burned DVD+R DL's back without any problems.

Summary: Very good results! The Philips drive also sets the book type automatic to DVD-ROM. If we should point something out it will be the PI spikes in the beginning of the first layer on the DL media.

Before we round off this review, let us run the drive through some advanced tests at next page…

*UPDATE* - Added two DVD+RW media. Can be found here:

Something caught my attention... some of those scans seemed too good to be true, and I noticed that your sampling count was in the 13000 range. That's a whole order of magnitude lower than what it should be. Most KP scans have a sampling count in the range of 130000. Did you have realtime chart turned on during the scan? This will generally distort the error count downwards...
Thank you for fixing it. :X

Those +R results indeed look pretty nice. :) Wish I had one of these drives...
