Starting the tests

With the first tests we will concentrate on the reading capabilities and the speed of the drive as a reading device. So we can eventually check wether the drive really reads at 40x.

Our testmachine :

  • Asus CUSL2 Motherboard
  • Intel PIII1000
  • Harddisc Maxtor 30GB ATA 66
  • 384MB PC133 SDRAM
  • Hercules Phrophet 4500 VGA kaart met 64MB.
  • 1 Plextor 161040A
  • 1 Plextor 241040A
  • 1 Yamaha CRW2100

  • Speed test:

For our first test we took a CD-Rom benchmark-Utility to measure the drive's speed. Transferspeed is developed by Smart Projects (Peter Van Hoof) and is freeware Transferspeed is downloadable at the Smart Projects homesite.

    Transferspeedtest:

First we have a look at the previous Plextor model PX-161040A and later the PX-241040A to see if next to the writing speed Plextor has also increased the reading speed. We will make a difference between firmware revision V1.00 and V1.01 to check if a firmware upgrade can be significant towards the reading speed and quality.

Our first test is the older model PX-161040A

The Plextor PX-2410A with firmware V1.00

The Plextor PX-2410A with firmware V1.01

Transferspeedtest: Reading tests with transferspeed were made again on 20 th November 2001 under firmware V1.02

The Plextor PX-2410A with firmware V1.02

As we can see the reading speed isn't improved that much. The only difference is that this new Plextor is better tuned and thus having a slightly better performance than the older 16x.

The test CD we used to make this test is F-22 LighningIII from Novalogic. It is a PC-data CD of 77min55sec orl 684MB without any real protection. Just a routine that check's wether the CD is in the drive and an Illegal TOC (table of contents)

Average KB/sec test: The average amount of data that is being read in KB/sec The higher the better.

Average speed according to factor X: The average reading speed of the CD-drive according to factor XThe higher the better.

Highest measured speed according to factor X: The higher the better.

Highest measured Single Command Burst according to factor X: the average amount of data that is being read per second in the burst-mode. The higher the better.

    Conclusion Transferspeed:

The PX-241040A is a very good data-reader, and thus can act as a full CD-reading station. Above average transferspeeds and reliable reading. We used for this test a PX-241040A with firmware V1.00 and firmware V1.01 the difference between firmware revision V1.00 V1.01 and V1.02 is very clear. The average speed is slightly better (hardly recognizable, but yet). The burst rate has improved a lot from 72x up to 90x.

Excellent and comprehensive review. You leave us with only one question:

Where did you get the 1.02 firmware?

It is not posted on any of Plextor's websites yet.

Please share a link if you can!
Excelent review of this great piece of hardware.
I think i am going to get one myself to :4
Where did you find the 1.02 version of firmware?
Firmware 1.02 is not offically out yet.

We had permission from Plextor to publish the results of this new firmware before it is offically released.

It will be available soon! But we wanted to let u cdfreakers know the results before it is even released! :)
    I make a back up of NHL2002. Firmware 1.01; 16 minutes!!!!

The game work perfect. Great burner:)

How can I copy NHL 2002 ?? It has Safedisc 2 Protection, im reading with fast error skipping, intelligent bad sector scanning and disabling read error reports. I upgraded to 1.01 firmware.
    Use your Plextor for read

    read speed max: 4
    read retries: 3
    error corections: none

    Stay tuned
compare to 12x-10x-32x scsi, which is faster?
What TLA# is on the drive you tested?
I have one with TLA#0000 at work and with TLA#0100 at home, didn't have a chance to test any of them with SD2 yet.
    Where can I find 1.01 Firmware ?
    Plextor firmwares are here:
    www.plextor.be
Tested both drives with TLA #0000 and #0100, firmware 1.02, both copy SD2 fine.
    Hi!

I read your review and found one strange thing; As far as i know, Plextor 1610a does support only RAW reading but no sub codes. According to review you were able to perform sub code reading in LaserLock and SecuRom tests. I have the PX-1610A and haven´t been able to perform sub channel read with CloneCD or BlindRead. Both apps inform that the 1610 is not able to read subs. Am i stupid or why is it not working? I´ve used fm 1.02 and 1.03. With my Toshiba CD-Rom sub codes work fine with both apps.

PS. do you have a clue where can i find older firmwares to PX-1610A (1.0, 1.01, 1.02)?
    hoi xosak

    thanks for your test,
but it seems that TLA#0100, can't copy protected audio cd's and the TLA#0000 can copy protected audio cd's.

I do not know this is true, but it is mentioned on several forums on the internet.

Does any body know with what TLA number the test on cdfreaks is made with
I make a perfect copy of NHL 2002 on my PX_W2410TA tla #0000 with Clone CD in 17 min. I use Clony XL for setting's. :4 PLEX IS THE BEST :)
