What will you get ?

Here's what's in the package, let the picture of the box with its contents speak for itself. As you see Nero 5.5 is included.

And here a picture of the front

And this is the back side

More on the back side

We have one remark about the back side (positive):
Plextor integrated a cooling fan at the back of the drive. This cooler expands the reliability and the lifetime of the drive significant.
The cooler protects the drive of bufferunderruns and gives more reliability. A big goodie of this cooler is that is preventing the drive from an early 'worn-out'...

Due to the intensive use of the drive and the intense heat the optical unit produces after a certain period a laserbundle that is not as narrow as it should be. A result of this malfunctioning are constant coasters and a not so clear reflection. This is the moment that your drive has had its time. To prevent an early worn out this cooler is a very extra. For an A-quality CDR in good condition the reflection rate should be between 65-70 %.

This reflection rate is gained through good quality media with a low bler-rate and the intensity of the laserbeam. The worn-out is now partly compensated by the performing of OPC (Optimum Power Control)

The internal buffer of the Plextor is increased with 2MB. The total amount is now 4MB The advantage of this increase will give you faster writings and will reduce the amount of ufferunderruns at high speed writing drastically.

Technical features:

  • 24X write Zone CLV (2400/3000/3600 KB/s)
  • 10X rewrite (1500KB/s)
  • 17X-40X read CAV (2600KB/s - 6000KB/s)
  • ATAPI Interface (PIO Mode 4, Multiword DMA Mode 2, UDMA/33 Mode 2)
  • BURN-Proof Technology (Buffer Under Run Proof)
  • PoweRec II Technology (Plextor Optimised Writing Error Reduction Control)
  • Access Time 140 ms
  • 4MB Buffer
  • Capable of reading and writing CD TEXT information
  • Compatible with:
  • Windows, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000
  • MultiRead Compatible
  • Supports SPDIF (Digital Audio Output)
  • High Quality Digital Audio Extraction
  • Two-Year Full Warranty (parts, labor) (*)

    Extra:

We also noticed that Plextor Europe has changed its burning software. They changed from Roxio's WinOnCD V3.7 to the newest excellent Ahead Nero Burning Rom V5.5. Indeed a very good move. Nero is a very fine piece of burningsoftware with a lot of tweaks. Ahead software took a large market share with this nero Burning Rom the last year...

Excellent and comprehensive review. You leave us with only one question:

Where did you get the 1.02 firmware?

It is not posted on any of Plextor's websites yet.

Please share a link if you can!
Excelent review of this great piece of hardware.
I think i am going to get one myself to :4
Where did you find the 1.02 version of firmware?
Firmware 1.02 is not offically out yet.

We had permission from Plextor to publish the results of this new firmware before it is offically released.

It will be available soon! But we wanted to let u cdfreakers know the results before it is even released! :)

What TLA# is on the drive you tested?
I have one with TLA#0000 at work and with TLA#0100 at home, didn't have a chance to test any of them with SD2 yet.
    Where can I find 1.01 Firmware ?
    Plextor firmwares are here:
    www.plextor.be
Tested both drives with TLA #0000 and #0100, firmware 1.02, both copy SD2 fine.
    Hi!

I read your review and found one strange thing; As far as i know, Plextor 1610a does support only RAW reading but no sub codes. According to review you were able to perform sub code reading in LaserLock and SecuRom tests. I have the PX-1610A and haven´t been able to perform sub channel read with CloneCD or BlindRead. Both apps inform that the 1610 is not able to read subs. Am i stupid or why is it not working? I´ve used fm 1.02 and 1.03. With my Toshiba CD-Rom sub codes work fine with both apps.

PS. do you have a clue where can i find older firmwares to PX-1610A (1.0, 1.01, 1.02)?
    hoi xosak

    thanks for your test,
but it seems that TLA#0100, can't copy protected audio cd's and the TLA#0000 can copy protected audio cd's.

I do not know this is true, but it is mentioned on several forums on the internet.

Does any body know with what TLA number the test on cdfreaks is made with
I make a perfect copy of NHL 2002 on my PX_W2410TA tla #0000 with Clone CD in 17 min. I use Clony XL for setting's. :4 PLEX IS THE BEST :)
