Conclusion
It could have been a perfect ride for the QNAP TS-509 but as we deal with so many products that acquire updates over time, we have this rule we can only include what is available, no matter what.
That means QPKG options at this time are not completed. Most important and most wanted however are available (like SC7) I’m sure these will become available shortly but we cannot include what we cannot see and test.
The PRO status is justified but jumbo frames should be supported as well, at the least for the network connections used separately. I’m not sure we need it in FailOver and Load Balancing mode. Given the performance of the unit we call this a “medium” limitation instead of “High Importance”.
The ease of use, overall options on any and all features, the performance and the presentation of everything concerning this TS-509 is sublime. I can think of no other server offering the combination of these features (some come close) at this price level to begin with. The unit is available under €800 Euro and that’s quite sharply priced.
The advanced options for RAID configurations and activating Hot Spare are a bonus for extra safety and continuity of service.
The whole device is well organised, easy to use for novice users and advanced enough for others that it matches any class of consumers. Besides the few remarks made above, this is one hell of a complete system that will please even the most demanding consumers, unless they want / need jumbo frames. J I’m totally overrun by the QNAP as I expected less progress in tuning the applications but they’ve done it and I congratulate them for it.
The TS-509 Pro earned to be called the best NAS server out there at this moment and the most featured in combination with the easiest one to setup as it is fully automatic by a button press…
I’m sure we will find some bugs along the way and ways to even improve the QNAP TS-509 further (it never ends), but as far as I’m concerned, this is the device any user with high storage needs, has to include in their elimination process.
As for QNAP, some small arrangements for storing the Wake On Lan in the network configuration would be better than storing it under power management. Power management in my humble opinion is more for functions like scheduling…
Well, QNAP TS-509 is the second NAS this year leaving our review table with an award but it is the first that actually acquired the “Editor’s Choice” as it’s value and performance are just so much further than the competition except for the few missing items they should add to complete the picture!

Jumbo Frames cannot be added since the network cards used do not support these. These have been selected for their best performance though we still feel it's a mistake as less performant cards with Jumbo frames would still beat the performance of these...
IPKG packages are finished as well in the mean time and several bugs and issues have been resolved already...
