DVD+R DL/ R DL Writing performance

To round off this review, we will run some advanced tests on the Sony DRU-810A.

The 'Sheep Test":

For this test, we will use the Sheep tests made by Alexander Noé. Why is it called sheep test? That's because the logo of the first 1 to 1 copy program called CloneCD is a sheep. When looking at supported writers, you will notice that the feature list has sheep to indicate if a feature is supported or not. In this case we are interested in the writer's ability to backup/write weak sectors. Also called: 'Correct EFM encoding of regular bit-patterns."

  • No sheep: Can't backup any Safedisc 2 versions without the help of software tricks

  • 1 Sheep: Can backup Safedisc 2 up to version 2.4x without software tricks

  • 2 Sheep: Can backup Safedisc 2, including version 2.5x

  • 3 Sheep: Can write all possible weak sectors, few if any writers could do this.

One of our forum moderators Womble, has written a guide concerning the 'Sheep Test" that can be found here.

In the screenshot below taken from CloneCD, we see the Sony DRU-810A supports everything.

The Sony DRU-810A supports DAO-RAW96 recording mode, which basically means, it can write uncorrected data and sub-channel data.

Reader:
NEC 3540A

One Sheep Burner
SD2OLD

Yes

Two Sheep Burner
SD251

Yes

Safedisc v2.90
SD290

No

Three Sheep Burner
SHEEP3

No

As we can see from the table the Sony DRU-810A is a 'Two Sheep Burner", but it however failed to write the Safedisc V2.90 and Sheep3 tests.

CD-R Overburning test:

To test the CD-R overburning capabilities of Sony DRU-810A, we used the overburning test in Nero CD-DVD Speed. According to Nero CD-DVD Speed the drive can overburn disc larger then 99/100 minutes. For this test we used unbranded Infodisc 99min/900mb CD-R which is rated 10x speed.

The Sony DRU-810A reported an overburn capacity of 99 Minutes and 57 Seconds, so we attempted to created a test disc slightly smaller then the max reported overburn capacity. See below:

There are no problem writing this media around 99 minutes. We now ran a transfer rate test to check the created discs readability.

The Sony DRU-810A read the disc up all the way to the end without any error. We conclude that the Sony DRU-810A supports overburning 99 minutes CD-R.

DVD+R Overburning test:

To test the DVD+R overburning capabilities of the Sony DRU-810A, we used the overburning test in Nero CD-DVD Speed

According to Nero CD-DVD Speed the drive can overburn DVD+R disc up to 4649MB. The media we use is Fujifilm's with code YUDEN000T02 8x certified speed. However for this test we attempt to overburn 4600MB (4.49GB). Let's see how the drive performs.

There are no problem writing this media up to 4600MB or 4.49GB. We now ran quality scan on a Lite-On 1693S and BenQ 1640A, as well as transfer rate test to check the created discs readability.

The Sony DRU-810A writes the overburned disc with high quality and the transfer rate test looks excellent. We conclude that the Sony DRU-810A supports overburning 4600MB DVD+R.

This concludes our Sony DRU-810A review, lets head on to the last page to read our conclusion…

basically a benq dw1640.

read curves should not be done on the sony because the benq dw1640 is known to have great error correction and read curves can't be compared to those done on more sensitive drives (166s for example which was the standard)
Dahlings,

If this is a rebadged BenQ, it only cost less than £20 [before VAT] in the trade. So why sell your soul for this?

What do you mean you feel the need to be near to them because they are like royalty !! You mean like those halleluja types who watches those lovely things at the choir practice dreaming what they could do if they can get their grubby hands on those little angels. Shameful or what. Hold up your dignity and let 'royalty" show others how they hold up theirs, if they can find theirs. And it matters not if others aren't doing it either. We have to start somewhere or else we become pimps for every 'royalty" flashing their bit.

For heaven's sake, trying to sell 'royalty" instead of doing a little hardware review. Just look at the front bezel, where is the inspiration, eh? Know that ancient wisdom describes traders as worse than scum NOT because trading is bad but what types trading generally attracts. Like stools attracts flies.

Being dignified AND balanced in a review breeds honesty and quality and let the reviewed item stand for itself. Reviews that tries to sell is NOT a review. It's solicitation and colloquially, that's called pimping.
zevia, congrats for your review!
(is it the first one?)

MY SOFTWARE CDRIP MP3 DIDN'T START I HAVE XP PRO AND A DELL PENTIUM CELERON 4 DIMENSION 2400
THANKS A LOT TO THE SONY TEAM
I have this drive and I tried ripping Click in DVD Decrypter. I unchecked all the crap cells in ifo mode and started to rip. It gave me an error and so I closed it down. The my drive wouldn't read more than 2.0x. I am not sure how it happened but I believe the drive DOES have drive lock. I ended up crossflashing to the BenQ 1640 and it reads at full speed now.
