Conclusion

SafeAudio, you probably already heard about it. It's the music industries latest technology to make sure they will get their money from the public.

I've never seen a industry that is so keen on money and tries in any way to protect it's products so desperately. Since they have stopped Napster they are disliked by more and more people, but they don't seem to care.

Macrovision

SafeAudio is an Audio CD protection developed by Macrovision. This Californian company has become famous by their VHS and CD (SafeDisc) protections. Both have been cracked, but do what they are designed for, protect the contents of media, or at least make it as difficult as possible to duplicate it. Of course most of the CD Freaks visitors are able to bypass the protections, but the average home user will not.

Altough SafeAudio is rather easy to bypass I think Macrovision can already market it as a success as it seems a lot of record companies have adopted the technology. Soon Macrovision will publish their results and I'm very curious how much they've made this year.

Think about this, Macrovision only excists because there are people like us that like to backup their music. Thinking of that, they should very happy with us .

Watermarking ?

A technology to prevent consumers from backing up is watermarking, this means that the digital signal of audio will contain a signal that marks it as an copy. SafeAudio does not work this way. Watermarking is controversial as in tests good ears could say whether an audio track was marked or not, thus the quality of the audio was degraded.

SafeAudio protects a CD only from ripping. This means that converting your CD to MP3/WMA files should be impossible. Stupid of course, as there are MP3 players on the market, just like a walk/disc man that you can carry around and for those you NEED to convert your CD's.

The technology

So SafeAudio is no watermark, but does protect the contents of a CD from ripping, what's the trick ?

Macrovision likes to use the CD standards to it's limit's as it does with SafeDisc 2, also SafeAudio has some tricks to fool your CD player.

During the production of SafeAudio, the production plant will change some of the error correction data of the CD. Error correction is besides the actual content very important for a CD. The smallest scratch or piece of dust will create gaps in the music but your CD player is able, due error correction methods, to replace these gaps with the actual music and you won't notice your CD player is doing it !

SafeAudio changes the so called EFM code on the CD. Easily said; EFM code makes sure the CD can be played in normal conditions, it is part of the error correction system that is used on audio CD's. Errors in (this)data can easily be repaired by a CD player in both your hifi set as your computer when playing audio CD's. If you want to rip this data however - (transfering it to your HD)- these errors will not be corrected by your HD as only a CD player know how to do this, resulting in gaps and bad noises in the audio.

Macrovision and TTR (that started developing this technology) say that the error corrections that are done while you play a CD in your normal CD player/computer can not be heard, for now there is no reason to believe they are wrong.

The main questions rises, can we bypass it ?

As far as I know no one knows which studio is using the SafeAudio
or which title is protected with SafeAudio and I am wondering how can you
hack if you don't know what to hack ????????
http://www.davecentral.com/8966.html CDFS.VXD
The links to the CDFS.VXD file are all dead. Is SafeAudio so afraid for it?? Who knows a link that isn't dead??
padus and teac will work nicely together, but it takes long to copy.:)
Complete propaganda. Nothing has been hacked. They are trying to lay claim and bullshit people into thinking that hackers will always win out. You may win a nice jail sentence.

No, not true.

Alternate cdfs.vxd just makes the audio tracks on a CD visible as WAV
files, allowing the tracks to be drag and dropped to the hard disc. It
doesn't do anything magic to improve the quality of a rip.

It could be that the report refers to a CD protected by someone else.

Do not post any content in your message (links, info, etc...) that might be illegal. CD Freaks does not want to be associated with that! Ignoring this request will result in a warning or even a permanent ban.

Cd Freaks does not want to be associated with anything illegal..that is the fucking funniest thing I have ever read. This whole website is illegal and promotes hacking.. Fucking hypocrites. Everyone knows you have no morals.
From the news on Reuters it looks like all the main record companies are looking at this technology. (Even Sony, which supprised me as they have quite a collection of MP3esq players available.)

SafeAudio Protection improved ?? I got the new nsync album lying next to me and for me its impossible to read it on my pc. the cd-rom drive keeps spinning and spinning and can't read the CD. I already have the new cdfs.vxd, but its useless cause my cd-rom drive doesn't accept the cd. anyone can help ?? :(
I have worked out a new copy protection that can be applied to crap CDs like Nsync. It's called Scratch-Protect 2000. It works like this:
You take a stone (try to find a grey - semi round one, I've heard they work best). Grab a copy of the CD (has to contain really crap music such as Nsync). Now take the stone and rubb it against the CD. Trust me, no one is ever going to copy this CD!!
Cactus Data Shield Broken ? Anyone ??

1 million copy-protected CDs released !!!!!!

Its a bit funny to hear about anti-ripping cd protections and any attempts to protect music on internet - if we can hear it we can rip it - I take my friens cd, if my cd-rom dont want to read it I just take an ordinary cd-player with digital output(I suppose most normal cd-players have it)and plug it into my pc and voila (some modern cdprz are "too smart" and dont read cd-rs), besides as I can remember myself I've bought my last cd around 1997 =](not bad for a dj ???)and I wont buy any.
THIS WAS ABSOLUTE CRAP!!! I CHECKED THE AUTHORS PAGE, i even checked the html on the download page they didnt even put in the code for the link!!!!JEEZ PPLZ GET IT RIGHT!!!!:( :( :(
SafeAudio ?
Get a Plextor drive and grab ripperX!
Can play the protected CD's just fine, rip em, whatever!
SafeAudio is a waste of money. SafeAudio is very easy to overcome as long as you have a good sound card and both a burner and a cd/dvd drive: play the audio cd in the cd/dvd device (output through spdif to sndcard), perform a 'live audio burn' in yer favorite cdr software (make sure it knows spdif is the source) and viola...the audio never gets to be analog thus resulting a perfect digital copy. :4
SafeAudio is perhaps one of the greatest uses of money in the modern history. A tool to help preclude morons who do not have any morals from ripping off copyrighted material. I am glad some company is doing something useful.

I love the duplicity of this webiste..they ban people who have MVSN domains or who speak out against this morally bereft website...yet they insist that this website is protected under freedom of speech. How hypocritical?
I hope they will at least have the decency to put stickers on the Albums that are protected this way.

that is funny. How about people having the decency not to copy cd's illegally. People should put stickers on their foreheads that read " I like to rip off copyrighted material and do whatever I want with it"

No the music labels should not put any labels on it that would defeat the purpose. Perhaps they should put a label such as "hahahahahaha we now have a product that will keep idiot hackers from costing us money..now please be a good little boy and just listen to the CD"
wah wAh wah! stop whining you little sissy girl. don't you know how to work a search engine? ftpsearch.lycos.com! put cdfs.zip in and see what you get. [angry russian]
Who the hell says that it's right for record companies to pimp artists in the first place? TLC was making .6 cents on the dollar. I'm sure the label *really cares about its artists*... Horsecrap. They treat intelligent, independent artists like a skunk at a garden party. The sooner record companies burn to the ground the better. Good artists will make art regardless of the payoff. No-talent asswipes like NSYNC on the other hand...
Can you still copy a 'mix disc' from Safeaudio encoded discs? I don't rip with a computer and I've never used Napster, but I do like to make backups for my car. Does SA change this?
This is so funny to read. We won't stop copying disks, just like you won't stop crying about it. It is what we like to do right?
the existence of copy protection on certain identified and unidentified CD's has set off much discussion among consumers and hackers. Some articles and web postings suggest that SafeAudio can be circumvented by using special ripping software. We have tested SafeAudio with these ripping software packages, and in each case, our protection was not circumvented. Other web postings have claimed that people have been able to hack a particular CD release when we know that the disc in question did not even have SafeAudio protection. There have also been other allegations in the press that because the SafeAudio anti-piracy solution is embedded in the music, that this will somehow diminish the quality of the consumer's listening experience. I can tell you that trained professionals called "Golden Ears" at the major labels have tested the quality of SafeAudio CD's. SafeAudio passed these tests with flying colors. We can continue to expect controversy surrounding the protection of CD audio discs. We believe that it is not necessary, nor is it even possible to respond to all of these unsubstantiated rumors.

HA HA HA HA HA
Macrovision blows!
Firstly I'd like to congratulate Domi on his informative & articulate article.
Then I'd like to say that conrtary to your corporate posters views, I have found nothing illegal on this site. [If I show you a document that tells you how to make a bomb, am I a bomber?].
Recording the audiostream direct to HDD DOES work (thanks for that), it's just a little tempermental.
Oh, and as for Efrayem's "Golden Ears", my 10 year old brother spotted your dodgy "Pop-Crackle" [his words, not mine] protection.
If you want illegal softs, this is not really the place to be, try o-dayawrez or gamecopyworld.

**I said I'd tell you what you needed to hear, not what you awnted to hear**
Well Thanks for the news about the cdfs.vxd. it works fine :)
Same is a good bypass to the protection cd, you can save time in most audios applications like :
audiocatalyst : if you want speed when you make mp3, just encodes files manually and pick directly the wav file in the audio cd. Good speed and better result garantied cause no more clicks
And for Cool Edit Users :
Place directly your audio cd in drive, select open, select cd, select the good directory and cool edit just read the file as the same way before you used cool edit :) You lots of time doing this
No more recording cause now YOU CAN SEE THE WAV FILES on the cd and Cool edit too :)
Thanks for the file :)
Save time = more money
See Ya
It seems to me that if tiny gaps in data are being used as protection this means that new Safeaudio cds will not stand up to what we consider the normal rigors of cds. Smaller imperfections will be more likely to create noticable problems.
Copying audio cd's is illegal. My question is why have we got MP3 players if we cannot use them? Are the 'RCs' gonna release choons in MP3 format. :d
"Perhaps they should put a label such as "hahahahahaha we now have a product that will keep idiot hackers from costing us money."

Perhaps they should put a label such as "hahahahahaha We can continue price fixing one-hundred times the cost of a CD, and still keep our monopoly."

Damned Luddites.

WHAT'S REALLY IRONIC IS THAT SONY, THE FOLKS THAT FOUGHT LIKE HELL TO BRING US THE BETAMAX AND HOME VIDEO RECORDING, NOW WANT TO STOP US FROM BACKING UP OUR CDs OR MAKING THEM MORE PORTABLE.

AS FOR MUSIC SWAPPING SITES LIKE NAPSTER, THEY'RE LIKE COCKROACHES. STOMP ONE OR A HUNDRED, AND THERE ARE HUNDREDS OR THOUSANDS MORE HIDING IN THE WALLS, WAITING TO RAID THE KITCHEN WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT.
my mates son 11 years old put the new mj(bubbles owner)cd in to the cd then dragged the cda tracks over in to nero and hey presto perfect backup

clever these macrovision blokes eh
As long as music is distributed on digital media, copy protection can be hacked, becuase when you get down to it, its ones and zeros.
Guys, dudes, dudettes, music lovers, hackers and anti-hackers worldwide. Respect!!!!. You is wicked innit! Inspiration is contagious so wether you pay for your music or all you do is share your passion for this art form, you are part of the fertile ground on which the artistic spirit finds a foothold. I am in no doubt that musicians who love what they do (like myself) will continue to write, produce, record, listen to and enjoy being a part of this most precious and increasingly accessible breath of life. I for one welcome Safe Audio for, just like at Glastonbury, too many people getting a free ride spoils it for everybody. It becomes unsustainable. This was an inevitable attempt at course correction and nothing personal if somewhat erratic. I for one feel very fortunate to be part of a society that has access to this wealth of vibe and if this action by the music industry helps keep music alive then I'm all for it. Besides, a true lover loves the foreplay and this will sort the men from the boys! =0)
What! someone still buys CDS. You guys are way behind the times. Get you music online, like everyone else in the world 8
Is there a solution for Windows XP users? I own a CD using this technology and I just want to be able to make a copy for my car and some mp3 for my portable player!
This might be knew: At home I have a cd-rom player which is able to read cd's protected with the Sony system (Key2Audio) probably because it doesn't support Multisession disks.
After installing cdfs.vxd to be able to copy SafeAudio disk the cd-rom player refused to read Key2Audiodisks... Strange for me but it might be useful for those amongs us trying to figure out the way the protections work.. so good luck..
Coping your CD's is NOT illegal (Home Recording Act 1989) - correct me if I'm wrong.
We can change the format of any media we buy - DVD into VHS, CD into tape, CD into MP3.
That is why the program that used to be out to rip dvds was taking away by Recording Industry, but courts decided we should be able to do it (the intent was to rip dvd onto HD, and then using video out to VHS)
Copy encryption? Stupid.

AOL has proved to us all that cds are cheap. Artists (and the companies) need to realize there is a new shift. That musicians should put out their music for free, by the internet or with free cds. This is advertising. Then we pay to SEE THEM,or buy their merchandise, like stickers etc. Then they can WORK FOR A LIVING, by playing thier music.
This is not a new concept. Look at videos, thats a give away by any standard.
The jig is up, you who play music will make your money by working for it. Not sitting in a studio then hoping for big payoffs.
BTW I know this isnt an easy concept for you musician types, but you are being raped by the industry supporting you.

Joe.
This is what macrovision calls a copy protection! What a joke!Maybe they should be called microvision instead!I burned a safeaudio disk no problem with my sony cdu4821 reader and my acer 24x10a burner with nero the first time I tried it!Somebody actually payed for this protection!Ha Ha
Yeah I noticed that on Roxio Easy CD Creator you can goto "CD" then "CD Information" and select the tracks you want, click convert audio, and wait for the tracks to appear on your hd. Give it a try so far I've had a 99% sucess rate to only one I had trouble doing this with was the Lord of the Rings sountrack. Happy copying!!!
This thing about copyprotection on cd's is actually really interesting.
According to Swedish law you are allowed to make backups of all your purchased media.
This makes copyprotection on cd's/video/dvd illegal. Problem is noone is trying to stop the bad guys from still making it.
No matter how good the "protection" is there is only a finite number of people working on it. In the end there are a thousand times that many people working to break it, and there is always someone smarter.
You know what's funny, is this was invented so the little guys like us can put food on the table for our family. As a recording artist, I have seen my income drastically decline since piracy became abundant, yet my demographic numbers are the same that they were.

People just don't seem to understand that making a record costs MONEY. I don't have a big label behind me, so I have to use proceeds from my previous album to pay for the next.

Would you take food from someone's mouth? If not, why the hell would you steal my songs?
