Advanced Tests

For our final (advanced) tests we're going to test how the Sanyo drive performs with data and audio copy-protections. Besides that we'll also check if the drive can overburn and if it can handle 8cm discs. Let's start with the data copy-protections:

Copy-Protected Data:

For our copy-protected data tests we, as always, used CloneCD to read and write several popular copy-protections. In the picture below you can see that the Sanyo CRD-BPDV2 is fully supported by CloneCD:

The Sanyo drive supports the DAO-RAW96 recording mode which basically means that the drive can write uncorrected data and SubChannel Data. In the table below we've summed up all of our results and after the table we will clarify our results:

Protected
Data
Game Title Protection
(version)
Read
Time
Back-up
Works
Desperados LaserLock -m:--s Cancelled
The Sims:
House Party
SafeDisc
v2.10.030
28m:40s Partially
Mafia: The City Of Lost Heaven (CD1) SafeDisc
v2.70.030
30m:14s Partially
Neverwinter Nights (CD3) SecuRom
v4.76.00.0051
4m:03s Yes
Final Fantasy VIII (CD1) PlayStation
LibCrypt
9m:45s Yes

The Sanyo CRD-BPDV2 showed a bit of a mixed result in our protected data tests. When it came to reading the LaserLock protection we had to cancel the read process since after three hours of reading only 1% of the disc had been read. When reading and writing the SafeDisc protection the Sanyo performed a little better but it still needed around half an hour to read the discs. When writing the SafeDisc 2 discs we had to amplify the weak sectors to get a fully working back-up. Last but not least the Sanyo drive performed best when reading protections with SubChannel Data.

Copy-Protected Audio:

For our protected audio disc tests we used the Exact Audio Copy software. We simply inserted the audio discs in the Sanyo drive and waited if the drive could recognize the disc and if so, could extract the audio tracks. In the table below we've summed up our results:

Protected
Audio
Audio Title Protection
(version)
Exact Audio Copy
Shakira - Laundry Service Key2Audio
version 2
Read the disc without problems
Celine Dion - A New Day Has Come Key2Audio
version 3
Read the disc without problems
Bitte Ein Beat! - Beat 5 Cactus Data Shield
200
Could recognize disc but had some timing problems
Yorin FM - Hitzone 21 Doc.loc Could not recognize disc

The Sanyo drive showed a good performance with the Key2Audio protected discs. When reading the Cactus protection we had some timing problems when extracting multiple tracks. When we extracted the tracks separately we experienced no problems but in the extracted tracks we could sometimes hear some pops and clicks. This is better illustrated in the picture below where we loaded an extracted track in the Nero Wave Editor software:

As you can see in the picture there are small spikes in the extracted audio track resulting in pops and clicks. Finally, the Doc.loc protected disc could not be recognized by the drive at all. We of course also tried other software like CloneCD but this gave us the same result.

Overburning:

For our overburning test we, as always, used the Nero CD/DVD Speed software and started the test. According to the CD/DVD Speed software the Sanyo CRD-BPDV2 can overburn to around 93 minutes:

The Sanyo drive does not support complete overburning up to 99 minutes but how does it perform when reading 99 minute media? To test this we simply inserted a 99 minute disc in the Sanyo drive but unfortunately the drive failed to recognize the disc. When we used a smaller capacity disc of 88 minutes the Sanyo drive could recognize it but reading didn't go that well, as you can see in the screenshot below:

8cm Discs:

As a final test we tested if the Sanyo drive could read and write 8cm discs. For our write test we used Nero Burning Rom and after that we used Nero CD Speed to do another transfer rate test. Both tests were completed without a problem:

That concludes our Sanyo CRD-BPDV2 review! Let's go to our final words and conclusions...
