Re Write Tests

The Sanyo CRD-BPDV2 supports 10x (1.500kb/s) CD-RW re-writing, 2.4x (3.312kb/s) DVD+RW re-writing and 2x (2.760kb/s) DVD-RW re-writing. On this page of our review we'll see what these speeds mean when writing normal data compilations and when using the packet writing method. Unfortunately at the time of writing this review we had no 2x DVD-RW media available so we can only concentrate us on the drive's DVD+RW performance.

Re-Writing Data:

For our data re-writing tests we simply set up a new compilation of 650MB using the Nero Burning Rom software. We used the DAO (Disc At Once) writing method. In the screenshot below you can see the burn process completed successfully:

As you can see our data compilation was written in 8 minutes and 7 seconds, which is a little slower than what the Plextor PX-504A drive needed (7m:44s). For our next DVD+RW test we set up a new DVD-ROM compilation of about 4.4GB. We again used the DAO writing method and started the write process:

The total compilation was written in just under 24 minutes, including the time needed to format the disc before burning (18 seconds). As we already said we had no 2x DVD-RW media available but 2x writing would mean a total write of around 29 minutes, about 5 minutes slower than 2.4x recording. Let's continue with packet writing:

Packet Writing:

For our packet writing tests we used Ahead's InCD software and tried to test both the Sanyo's CD-RW and DVD+RW performance. Unfortunately we had some problems with the Sanyo drive and its CD-RW performance as it needed twice as much time to format the disc and write the 400MB of test data compared to the Plextor PX-504A.

We are unsure what the cause of this problem was but changing the InCD version and using different CD-ReWriteable media made no difference. Luckily, when testing the Sanyo's DVD+RW packet writing performance we had no problems.

For our DVD+RW tests we set-up a test folder with random data measuring 4.35GB (4.673.699.000 bytes) in size. We then inserted an empty disc and measured the time it took for the drive to format the disc after which the test data was dragged and dropped to the disc via the Windows Explorer. In the table below you can see the results:

From the table you can see that the Plextor PX-504A drive was again slightly faster than the Sanyo CRD-BPDV2 drive when it came to formatting the disc and writing the test data. Since the Sanyo drive does not support the Mount Rainier format this concludes our re-writing tests.

Now that we've finished our normal tests, it's time for some advanced testing...
