| Manufacturer | Optiarc |
| Product | Optiarc AW-G170A |
| Description | Sony's first drive manufactured by Optiarc Supports DVD-RAM |
DVD+R/RW Writing performance:
The specifications of this drive tell us that it should write DVD±R at 18x, DVD+RW/-RW at 8x/6x, and DVD±R DL at 8x.
We used CD-Speed to create our test disc, and then we used a Lite-On drive with KProbe to test our written media for disc quality. We also tested the readability of our tests discs using the Sony AW-G170A and CD-Speed's Transfer Rate Test.
DVD+R:

Plextor 16x DVD+R media at 18x, average writing speed of 13.27x, and a writing time of 5 minutes and 27 seconds. The result is good.

Verbatim 16x media burned at 18x. Once again the result is good.

Verbatim 8x DVD+R media at 16x, the result is good.

Sony 16x media burned at 18x. The result is good.
DVD+RW at 8x:

The Sony AW-G170A uses Z-CLV, (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD+RW at 8x. The average speed is 8.00x and total writing time is 7 minutes and 32 seconds. The result is ok.
Let's head to the next page and check out DVD-R/RW writing performance....

THIS IS crazxxy !

AD-7170A .... 1.85

I had the same problem.XP did not recognize the Sony AW-G170A as a burner.
I downloaded the free cd burner software from
http://www.audioi.com/cd-dvd-writer.htm
And this software did recognize it as a burner and finally worked.Give it a try....

I guess there is a bad batch out and about. I'm reluctant to return the drive because the problem is intermittent and I'm hesitant in flashing the firmware because it's still under warranty.
I will persist until it dies then I will return it :-)

The sound is heavy than a System's rebooting sound.
And while rebooting the system, Sony DVD's LED blinks now and earlier it was not blinking. I don't know the reason. Can anybody help me.

Thnaks in advance

are pc world selling crap gear or what ?.

. I was told this was the best
rap:

Very happy at first but for the last two months it thinks it is a DVD-Ram and refuses to read any other media or write.
I've been building computers since 1998 and never had trouble like this - stay clear of this drive!!!

this is piece of shit crap

Happy writing!
