Conclusion

How did TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress perform in our tests? Let’s summarise the positive and negative aspects of the application below.
TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress is an extremely powerful application and covers nearly every common video and audio output file format currently used. What’s more is the quality of the output is excellent in most cases and at the very least very good on the highly compressed formats which are currently popular, such as MPEG1, DivX and WMV.
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress is also very easy to use. There are enough wizards to allow the novice user to create great looking movie files, as well as enough advanced features to allow the more experienced user the flexibility they demand from an encoding application.
The feature set is also very good with TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress and covers some very advanced file output and encoding options. The built in editor should provide enough flexibility to meet most demands and again is very easy to operate.
There are virtually no negative things to say about TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress. The only negative thing we could find was the need to have an Internet connection to validate the registration key. This validation is required periodically, so an Internet connection is more or less a must to use this application.
To sum up, this is what we would say: “TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress is powerful with great quality file output. If you’re looking for a multi format encoder, then TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress might be just what you are looking for”.
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress can be purchased from the Pegasys website for $99.95
Based on our performance and quality tests, the features list and the general ease of use of TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress; we would like to award TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress our CDFreaks ‘Safe Buy’ award.

I bought it recently when they had a $20 reduction in price for a month. Don't know if the sale is still on.

The new file formats I wanted (divx and h.264) take longer to encode than many free alternatives on the market and produce terrible quality output compared to other tools at the same bitrate.
To top it off the avi files from my miniDV camera which encoded fine with version 3.0 don't encode properly with version 4.0. Every time I get a green screen flashing up at the end of my MPG file.
I've contacted their support about all of these issues. They have been of little help (when they've even bothered to respond). I've even offered to provide them with sample clips I've produced with their product and other tools to show them the problems. They have shown no interest in even seeing these clips.
I would recommend v3.0 for MPEG-2 encoding, but stay away from v4.0. It just plain sucks.
