Groovy!

The Blu-Ray Discs (BD) use the same recording method as DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs. This means you can rewrite them.

But there's another fun thing to the recording method. The discs are of a special format. The crystals that can change back and forth are not scattered over the disc or everywhere. There's a pattern of lines where this material exists. These patterns are called grooves.

Remember those old LP's? They have grooves as well! A given line which the needle of the pickup had to follow in order to play the music.

Of course on a Compact Ddisc, DVD and especially a BD, you cannot see those grooves with the naked eye anymore. We are talking about microns here!

A view inside a DVD-RW.

Here you can see the recording layer based on various elements and the groove they are in. Also there are some protection layers and the surface that it all is made on.

In the picture you can see the laserbeam heaten up the Recording Layer, changing the phase of the crystals.

Cool post, Mr. Belvedere. ;)

Great info on the BD. So, when's the expo on the 130GB CD3?

I thought there were so little reactions, I felt compassion with Mr. Belvedere. So once again: nice article. ;)
Ok. Great article... but... Why are they using MPEG2? We live in a world where MPEG4 has taken over(divx). All they need to do is creat a MPEG4 for super high resolutions(1080p).

Same with audio. By that time we will have DD10.2 or something like it. Audio should be encoded in WMA8(divx audio) or MP3PRO.
