On the Blu-Ray Disc (BD), you can store MPEG movies. As we all know, MPEG is a technology to store an enormous amount of data by using as little space as possible.
The basical method of MPEG storage is quite simple :
Take frame 1 .. and store it
Take frame 2 .. but do not store it directly. Store only the changes compared to frame 1.
Take frame 3 .. but do not store it directly. Store only the changes compared to frame 2.
And so on and so on.
MPEG can have quality loss, but that depends highly on the used algorithms and how much detail you are ready to lose.
The BD technology has a standard compression MPEG-2 Transport Stream (based on the IEC 13818 standards) which can record audio and video at the same time and maintain the same quality it was presented in.
More information about MPEG can be found here: http://mpeg.telecomitalialab.com.

I thought there were so little reactions, I felt compassion with Mr. Belvedere. So once again: nice article.

Ok. Great article... but... Why are they using MPEG2? We live in a world where MPEG4 has taken over(divx). All they need to do is creat a MPEG4 for super high resolutions(1080p).
Same with audio. By that time we will have DD10.2 or something like it. Audio should be encoded in WMA8(divx audio) or MP3PRO.
