When you have downloaded the client (the software you have on your computer)the client connects to the Napster servers (computers owned by Napster, that use other software, and knows how to handle the requests of your client). The client then tells the server what MP3's you are sharing. If someone searches for a MP3 file, the Napster server will tell him, where to find the MP3. Then your client connects to the client where the MP3 is stored, and the sharing begins.
As you see, the Napster servers are always needed, and if you cut those off, Napster can't work. Well this is what they are trying to do right now, without the central Napster servers no Napster. BUT is your Napster client useless without the official Napster servers ? No ! Some smart guys developed Napigator.
Napigator lists all Napster and OpenNap servers. OpenNap is an open source project, and allows everyone to run a Napster server. Some people running a server created a network, (every server of the network knows what files there are available on the network. These networks go by names as FastNap DJNap, and OpenNap. Napigator lists both the official Napster servers as the other not official servers. With one click, your Napster client connects to those other servers, and you will again find huge collections of MP3 files. These servers will be harder to fight for the record industry, cause they can popup everywhere.
Besides Napster, there are more companies that tried to offer the same service, one of them is Scour Exchange that is now trying to make a come back, with a legal service, how they will manage that, we don't know, but it seems they have trust in the future
There are still some others that try to fill the hole that Napster left, one of them is Kazaa, and according to our visitors it's quite neat. Then there is eDonkey2000, an application that still is not very popular, and that is heavily under construction. File Navigator uses the OpenNap network to connect and another popular one is Audio Gnome. If you want a list of all kinds of Napster like programs and networks then visit the OpenNap page, and as you see, there are a lot of both Napster clones as Napster alternatives.. But these use a central server, and they can be blocked by the authorities.

Good article Domin8tor! Too bad you did not mention WinMX as a good alternative. I know it is not very well known yet, buts its better than all other Napsterlookalikes. And believe me I've tried out a fair number of them. You realy should try it. Is fast and easy to use.
I know all you MP3freaks will love it!
You can find more at http://www.winmx.com or http://www.museekster.com
(Dutch). At Museekster you can even download a small (1.1Mb) demovideo of WinMX. So
you can see for yourself that WinMX sure rules.

:7 Well said :7
Whether or not they want to realize that this world is becoming more "Digital" that is their problem. I definately agree with you on the price of cds. Lets see 12-15 dollars for maybe 1-3 songs that we'll actually listen?!? AS I SAID. WELL SAID DoMiN8ToR

Gnutella is still traceable. The users with most songs shared will be busted first. Freenet doesn't have this problem:
freenet.sourceforge.net
freenet.sourceforge.net

Well I think the future of music sharing is in an opensource serverless project - you cant close it servers, even if rec companies tell server owner to remove it it will become warez(it will make stuff even cooler :4),there is no way anyone can stop music sharing
.And right now I am thinkin' about creatin' such system
(I've so far done some thinkin' about algorithms I'll use.Programmin will start in september.Who wanna contribute email me, perhaps we can move file sharing to a new level...
